Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Moore.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the Sacramento area in a working-class family as the oldest daughter, and from a young age, I became the “third parent.” When my dad stopped working, I was just 12 years old. Both of my parents were struggling, and I quickly learned what responsibility, sacrifice, and grit truly meant. There wasn’t room to fall apart — I had to step up.
I started working part-time at a grocery store while still in high school, while also taking college classes. By 17, I had moved out on my own. Those early years shaped me. They built my resilience, my independence, and the kind of grit you don’t learn from a book — the kind forged through survival, hard choices, and believing you can create something better.
I found San Diego in 2016, and it felt like a turning point. Over time, I built what I once needed: a safe, empowering space for women to grow strong in every sense of the word. That vision became The Grit Gym.
Today, I run a women-focused training facility that’s about far more than workouts. The Grit Gym is a community, a chosen family where women build physical strength, mental toughness, and unshakable confidence. Grit isn’t just part of our name; it’s the foundation of everything we do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth? Nothing meaningful is ever built on perfectly solid ground.
Grit wasn’t always called Grit. I started my business 13 years ago under Moore Fitness. I became a fitness professional out of fear…fear of repeating unhealthy patterns and fear of losing control of my future. For most of my life, I believed my father had stopped working because he suffered a heart attack. That belief became my “why.” I built my business around prevention, strength, and the idea that we don’t get a second chance with our health.
Then, three years ago, I found out the truth. There was no heart attack. He had chosen to stop working and was battling mental illness and alcoholism. For years, I had unknowingly been carrying financial responsibility in ways I didn’t fully understand. Learning that felt like betrayal. It shook me deeply. I felt like the foundation I had built my purpose on wasn’t real.
I had to grieve that story. And then I had to rewrite it.
Rebranding wasn’t just a business decision, it was personal. I pushed harder, but with more clarity. What I loved about coaching became more refined. It was never just about preventing a heart attack. It was about resilience. It was about ownership. It was about choosing strength even when the truth hurts.
That’s where The Grit Gym was born.
Grit isn’t something I created. It’s something I’ve always had. I just finally gave it a name.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Grit Gym is a women-focused strength training facility in San Diego built on one core principle: resilience is built, not given. We specialize in small group strength training for women who want more than just a workout. These women want structure, accountability, and a community that challenges them to grow.
What sets us apart is that we don’t sell quick fixes, trends, or extremes. We coach foundational strength, sustainable habits, and mental toughness. Our programming is intentional, progressive, and designed to help women build real muscle, real confidence, and real discipline. We meet women where they are, but we don’t let them stay there.
We’re known for our culture. The energy in the room is different. It’s supportive but not soft. It’s empowering but not performative. Women walk in intimidated and leave feeling capable. Over time, they don’t just transform physically, they carry themselves differently in their careers, relationships, and personal standards.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that The Grit Gym isn’t built around aesthetics, it’s built around identity. Grit is the standard. We celebrate effort. We celebrate consistency. We celebrate showing up on the days you don’t feel like it. That’s what creates lasting change.
I want readers to know that this isn’t just a gym. It’s a space where women rewrite their stories. We offer small group strength training, personalized coaching support, accountability systems, and a community that feels like family. It’s a place to get strong, physically, mentally, and emotionally! Who doesn’t want to be surrounded by women who refuse to settle?
At the end of the day, we don’t just build strong bodies. We build strong women. We are LGBTQ friendly as well. Grit, is where the strong belong.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
You don’t need to feel ready. You just need to be willing. Grit isn’t something you’re born with… it’s something you build
