Today we’d like to introduce you to Shany Yeshanov.
Shany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started tutoring my peers back in high school and continued throughout college – it’s always been something I genuinely enjoyed. After graduating from UCSB with a degree in Computer Science, I worked as a Product Manager in tech for several years, continuing to tutor on the side. Eventually, I realized my true passion was education. I made the switch and began teaching high school calculus, all while still tutoring privately.
That journey led me to launch Productive Tutoring, where I now lead a small team of tutors—many of whom are current or former teachers who share my approach and philosophy. This is our specialty – we love helping kids feel confident and prepared. I personally meet with every student first to understand their strengths, challenges, and learning style, and then thoughtfully match them with one of our trained tutors based on both learning style and overall vibes.
We come directly to the family home and keep sessions warm, strategic, and highly tailored to each student.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road; starting something on your own rarely is. One of the hardest parts was simply making the decision to go for it. There was a lot of second-guessing and wondering if I was doing the right thing by stepping away from a more traditional career path. But when you’re deeply passionate about something and you know you’re meeting a real need, it’s hard to pass up that kind of opportunity.
Another challenge has been the rise of AI in education. It’s changing the landscape quickly, but rather than seeing it as a threat, we’re choosing to embrace it as a tool. We integrate it into our tutoring when it makes sense and use it to support, not replace, the human connection and personalized instruction that are so essential to learning.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Productive Tutoring is a top-tier, home-based tutoring company known for deeply personalized, relationship-driven academic support. We work with students in grades 3–12, offering everything from executive functioning coaching and homework help to test prep and advanced math.
What truly sets us apart is the human connection we bring to every session. We’re not a faceless platform—we’re real educators who meet each student exactly where they are. As the founder, I personally meet with every family to understand the student’s strengths, challenges, and learning style. After a few sessions working directly with the student, I thoughtfully match them with one of our trusted tutors. Many of our tutors are current or former classroom teachers who share my warm, structured, and intentional approach. We make every minute count. Other companies often just try to make a match—but they don’t take the time to ensure it’s a truly good fit. We do.
What I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built with families—and how much we genuinely care. Parents often tell us they feel a huge sense of relief after the first session, like someone finally gets their kid. That’s what this is really about: helping students feel supported, confident, and capable, with a tutor who feels like a teammate.
It’s not just about checking a tutoring session off the calendar—it’s about finding someone who truly connects with your child and makes learning feel motivating, not like a chore.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One childhood memory that stands out is when I used to play “school” with my friends. I’d create little worksheets, grade their “assignments,” and set up a mini classroom in the living room. I took it way too seriously but I loved it. Looking back, it’s funny how naturally the role of teacher felt to me, even then. That playful pretend game ended up being a glimpse into the career and passion I’d one day pursue.
