Exploring Life & Business with Sheena Shelton of Bodied by Sheena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Shelton

Hi Sheena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in San Diego, I’ve always had a love for fitness, but my main career has been in social services and counseling. I hold associate degrees in Psychology and Social Behavior, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies with a minor in Counseling and Social Change from San Diego State University. Despite my academic and professional background, I always felt drawn to becoming a certified personal trainer.

That passion became a lifeline when I found myself in an unhealthy and abusive relationship. During that time, I turned to fitness—specifically a boxing gym that remained open during COVID—attending 5 a.m. classes as a way to maintain my sanity and create space for myself.

After finally finding the courage to leave that relationship, I struggled with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I isolated myself, unsure of how to move forward. One day, I realized I didn’t recognize the woman I had become. I knew I was created for more, and I refused to let my past define me. I started with something simple—walking. Every day, I walked through my North Park neighborhood, taking in nature, the sunlight, and the fresh air. Little by little, I felt myself come alive again.

Determined to rebuild my strength, I sought out a certified personal trainer. For six months, I trained under his guidance, not only learning proper technique but also gaining mentorship. That experience solidified what I already knew—I belonged in the fitness industry. Today, I use my journey and education to empower other women, helping them build strength, confidence, and resilience through movement.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but it’s been a journey I never could have imagined for myself. Like anyone else, I’ve experienced highs and lows, but I’m incredibly grateful for the people I’ve met along the way—those who have inspired me and lifted me up during the tough times.

One of my most difficult struggles was experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, which forced me to pause and focus on my healing. For months, I had to step away from training, which was heartbreaking because I wanted to physically be there for my clients. But I knew I couldn’t show up for them the way I wanted to until I took care of myself first.

During that time, I leaned into healing, journaling, and reflecting. I channeled my energy into creating new programs and launching The Bodied Blog, where I share my challenges and the resilience that has carried me through. That season of stillness taught me the importance of rest, self-care, and trusting the process. It wasn’t easy, but it strengthened my purpose and deepened my commitment to helping others navigate their own journeys with grace and resilience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bodied by Sheena ?
I’m the CEO and founder of Bodied by Sheena, where I help women build strength, confidence, and resilience through corrective exercise and strength training. My focus is on proper form, injury prevention, and intentional movement, ensuring that my clients feel strong and capable of strength training. I prioritize education and empowerment, teaching women why each movement matters so they can feel confident both in and out of the gym. I also mentor new personal trainers, lead a women’s walking club, and collaborate with local gyms to foster a supportive fitness community.

In addition, I founded Black Fitness Excellence, a community dedicated to celebrating and elevating Black trainers and coaches in San Diego. Through networking events, workshops, and collaborations, I create spaces where Black fitness professionals can connect, inspire, and support one another while making health and wellness more accessible and culturally relevant.

Beyond training, I share my journey through The Bodied Blog and my podcast, Fully Surrendered, where I explore faith, fitness, and overcoming life’s challenges. Whether through coaching, content, or community, my mission is to help people reclaim their strength—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing growth—both in myself and in the people around me. Whether it’s a client mastering a movement they once struggled with, a new trainer gaining confidence in their skills, or someone finding strength through a difficult season, those moments fuel me.

Helping women feel strong, both physically and mentally, brings me so much joy because I know what it’s like to feel powerless. Fitness was my way back to myself, and now I get to help others do the same. Seeing my daughter thrive also makes me incredibly happy. Watching her grow into a strong, confident young woman reminds me why I do what I do—to create spaces of inspiration and empowerment for the next generation.

I’m also a foodie at heart and love trying new restaurants, exploring different flavors, and enjoying great meals with good company. But above all, cake is my absolute favorite! There’s just something about the perfect slice of cake that brings me pure happiness.

Ultimately, my happiness comes from purpose. Whether it’s through training, mentorship, community, or faith, I find joy in knowing that the work I do makes a difference in people’s lives.
