Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Sparks.
Hi Sonya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Sonya Sparks, owner and chief curator at Sparks Gallery in the vibrant heart of San Diego, CA.
My mission is to pair clients with affordable, accessible, and thought-provoking artwork, so they find art that speaks to their hearts.
Each year, I have the privilege of collaborating with hundreds of diverse clients who are on a quest to acquire original contemporary artwork. Collectors are welcomed to our gallery to enjoy artistic activations and art parties, as well as original contemporary art.
If you live in Southern California, you may have seen my curated exhibitions for: the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance, Allied Craftsmen of San Diego, Cannon Art Gallery (Carlsbad, CA), and the Escondido Arts Partnership.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have recently been adding some new features to our business to provide value to artists and art appreciators to further our mission.
I created a quiz for collectors and art appreciators to quickly reveal personal insight into their innate collecting style, which is free to take and can be viewed here: https://sparksgallery.com/quiz
I am now also helping artists who are not a best fit for our gallery in one-on-one consultations so that they can have a 5 step plan to get their foundations in place before approaching other galleries. I also include recommendations on galleries that I believe would be a good fit based on their style of work during my meeting with artists.
With these two new tools for both clients and artists, we are able to better support the local art community.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In addition to the previous updates, I have also been hosting immersive art parties at the gallery, typically based on a theme. this year’s theme was “1920’s Deco”.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We have been able to have some wonderful collaborations this year locally, such as for the World Design Capital San Diego-Tijuana 2024. We are pleased to have a vibrant and artistic border town as our home for our retail store.
