Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Madrid.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began in the retail industry in 1984 as a sales associate at my hometown JC Penney’s. In 1988 I accepted my first full-time sales position with a little-known start company at the time called The Men’s Wearhouse. I started my made-to-measure career in 1992 with a company called Patrick James in northern California. In 2009 I was recruited by the oldest retailer in the US, Brooks Brothers until the Pandemic shut down our factory and the company was sold in 2020. My old colleague from our days at Brooks Brothers brought me on in my current role at Indochino a year ago as the District Manager for 10 doors from San Diego to San Francisco.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth, I’m not sure is the word I would use to describe my journey. Our business is a 100% relationship business. It’s all about providing exceptional service and gaining trust of your clients, who often our your best source of referrals so you can continue to grow your numbers.
Some of the struggles are relocating twice and having to essentially start all over again from scratch. You must be a networking machine in the beginning, and you must do a lot of extra work with the expectations of nothing in return immediately. It’s truly a marathon not a sprint. To be one of the best, you must be an ambassador for your firm or brand, and you must become a mayor of your community.
