Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Javier.
Tia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Bilinguatherapy started with my daughter. When she was three years old and needed speech therapy, I struggled to find a single Spanish-speaking speech-language pathologist in our city. That experience led me to research the deeper issue and what I found shocked me: at the time, there were only 87 Spanish-speaking SLPs in the entire state of Virginia.
I realized this wasn’t just a personal challenge, it was a systemic gap. So I went back to school, earned a second master’s degree, and became the therapist I couldn’t find for my daughter.
From there, Bilinguatherapy was born. What began as a deeply personal mission has grown into Richmond’s first and only pediatric therapy practice specializing in bilingual speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Today, we serve over 1,000 appointments a month, providing culturally affirming, language-accessible care for families who are often overlooked.
But healing doesn’t stop with our clients—we’re also building the next generation of bilingual clinicians. Through Bilinguatherapy, I train and mentor aspiring therapists, helping them build the skills and cultural competence needed to serve diverse populations with excellence. We also launched a nonprofit, Bilinguatherapy Cares, which supports families regardless of income and hosts language learning camps, social groups, and professional training programs.
At its heart, Bilinguatherapy is more than a clinic it’s a movement to make high-quality, culturally responsive care accessible to every child who needs it. It started with my daughter, but it’s grown into something much bigger.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road, but a meaningful one. One of the biggest challenges has been finding bilingual clinicians. There’s a nationwide shortage, and in Virginia, the numbers are especially low. It’s not just about speaking Spanish, it’s about having cultural humility and being willing to learn how to serve families in a setting that’s still new and evolving.
Another major challenge was building everything from the ground up. I didn’t come from a business background, I had to learn how to run a company, manage a team, create systems, and navigate insurance and compliance, all while still being a full-time therapist and mom. Every step of the way required trial, error, and resilience.
Despite the struggles, the mission has always been clear: to provide high-quality, bilingual, culturally affirming therapy for the families who need it most. And that purpose keeps me going.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bilinguatherapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Bilinguatherapy is a pediatric therapy practice based in Richmond, Virginia, and we’re proud to be the first and only practice in the region that specializes in bilingual speech, occupational, and physical therapy. We primarily serve Spanish-speaking families, many of whom have struggled to access services that truly understand and reflect their language and culture.
What sets us apart is our commitment to cultural competence, family-centered care, and language accessibility. All of our services are available in both English and Spanish, and our team is trained not only in therapy techniques but in how to build trust with families who have often been underserved or overlooked. We don’t just translate therapy—we transform it to fit the cultural and linguistic needs of our community.
We’re known for being innovative, inclusive, and deeply mission-driven. In addition to therapy, we offer bilingual parent education, social groups, a summer language-learning camp, and professional training for future bilingual clinicians. Through our nonprofit, Bilinguatherapy Cares, we provide therapy scholarships and community programming so that no child is left behind due to financial barriers.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve created a safe, affirming space for families to feel seen, heard, and supported, often for the first time in a healthcare setting. Our families know they belong here, and that matters.
What I want readers to know is that Bilinguatherapy isn’t just a clinic, it’s a movement. We’re changing what therapy looks like for bilingual children and families, and we’re building a pipeline of diverse professionals who will carry that change forward.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Richmond is its diversity and resilience. There’s a strong sense of community here, especially among families who are building something better for the next generation. I’ve met so many incredible people who are passionate about growth, equity, and making this city better for all of us. Richmond has a rich cultural history, and it’s been beautiful to contribute to its evolving story through the work we do at Bilinguatherapy.
What I like least is the ongoing disparity in access to services, especially for immigrant and Spanish-speaking communities. There are still significant gaps in healthcare, education, and language access. Families often have to fight just to receive the basic support their children need. It’s part of why I started Bilinguatherapy; to help close that gap. Richmond has so much potential, and I hope to see even more investment in equity and inclusion in the years to come.
