Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Thompson.
Hi Ty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Minnesota, I was surrounded by agriculture; after graduating from high school, I spent a few years raising hogs as well as working a cow calf operation with a local rancher. From there I went off to equipment operating school traveling to many states for work, eventually meeting Carene and making my way to San Diego.
I knew from my life in Minnesota that I wanted to have my own ranch; Carene and I talked about making it happen and the way we would raise our hogs- happy, healthy. We moved from Carmel Valley to Ramona and were able to find a piece of land to get started- we rearranged our entire life to dedicate our time to Thompson Heritage Ranch and our mission.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Leaving the life, you know for the life you want to build in itself is a challenge, but not so much a struggle. Each day we have to rearrange our resources and dedicate time and money to the ranch in order to make it work and to grow successfully.
The only “struggle” we have found is the decline in butchers; it seems like a dying trade, yet it’s so important for ranchers.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Thompson Heritage Ranch LLC was founded in 2022 in Ramona, CA; we specialize in pasture-raised heritage breed hogs, including ABA registered Berkshire and Duroc, as well as organic and free-range chickens.
What sets us apart is that we do as we say when it comes to the way we raise our animals- they are happy, healthy, living on pasture, eating what the land provides (with supplementation from a vegetarian, non-GMO feed). Our dedication, knowledge, commitment to education, the quality of life our animals live, and the quality of our pork are just a few of the things we are proud of at Thomspon Heritage Ranch.
Thompson Heritage Ranch offers whole and half hogs, as well as specialty cuts and eggs. Berkshire pork is redder, sweeter, and has a beautiful marbling, making it tender and juicy, also known as the Kobe beef of pork.
We have a subscription box coming soon all with local pickup or delivery. We also offer ranch tours and work with private chefs and events.
Alright, so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
