Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Matthews.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I played basketball my whole life growing up since I was in 1st grade. I developed a love for it and worked extremely hard and smart. I made varsity as a freshman and then played division 3 college basketball at University of La Verne. After a good freshman season, I decided to pursue SBT Training. I started off training in Orange County for 7 months before moving to San Diego to finish my degree at SDSU. I started in San Diego in November and since then we’ve grown to over 20 clients, 5 employees, and a following of over 30,000 across all social media platforms. We continue to grow and the end goal is to have our own personal gym so that we can help hoopers grow mentally and physically.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has had some bumps in the road. As the founder, I’ve had to learn many different skills in order to make the business profitable. I’ve had to learn marketing, sales, management, finance, and law skills so that I’m able to do everything correctly and efficiently. Most of the struggles were all on the business side because I knew I was able to train and get my clients results, but the struggle was making sure people knew about me so that I could train them and make the business more profitable.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
SBT Training is a basketball skill development program in which we only hire trainers who practice what we preach. If I want to get a young man or woman to the varsity or college level, I know what to do for them because I’ve done it myself. The same rule applies with my trainers that I hire. We specialize in skill development and mindset development. We also improve athletic performance and IQ on the basketball court. The reason why SBT Training is different from other basketball training programs is because we practice what we preach and we focus heavily on the mental side of the game. Everyone says sports are 90% mental and 10% physical, but don’t talk about the mental side enough. This is one of the main reasons, my personal instagram @skillsbyty has grown to over 26k followers in a short amount of time. It is because I talk about the true sacrifice and work ethic that goes into achieving a hard goal. I’m most proud about this brand wise because I want to show everyone that no matter what you’re trying to accomplish in life, whether it’s getting a college scholarship or getting a job promotion, it takes a certain level of discipline, work ethic, and sacrifice to achieve it. I want the readers to know that SBT Training will never quit on doing our best to provide the best basketball training service in Southern California. This will be shown not only by our drills and exercises, our systems, our feedback, our training experience, but also by the relationships we foster with both the athlete and the parent to reach a deeper level of trust that goes beyond basketball.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
In order for you to achieve something you truly want, you first must be who you really are.
