Today we’d like to introduce you to Yana Sanakina.
Hi Yana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to America almost 15 years ago with two daughters and almost immediately decided to publish my own magazine for Russian-speaking women. My goal was to support my native community and especially women because I immediately realized that life as an immigrant is not at all like in the American movies. I didn’t know if I could do it or not, but I was full of enthusiasm. And here is my result – our Gorozhanka magazine (that means City Girl) will have our 14th anniversary of publication. In Russia, I had my own agency and I personally collaborated with the Russian office of the Cosmopolitan magazine, for which I not only worked with sponsors but also helped to organize big events.
A few years ago, Voice of America made a documentary movie about my magazine and me. At that time, I flew in a private jet with my friends and made a presentation of my magazine in the seven states of America. It was a hectic but fun journey as we stopped in a different city every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Another country – another culture – another language… It was not easy, my second language was German, but I did not know English at all. Far from my family and friends, I tried to do everything right so that my daughters did not suffer. Unfortunately, this did not always work out. However, I love America with all my heart, and I am grateful to her for all the opportunities she has given me. With all those challenges I was still able to fulfill my dreams!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?Gorozhanka magazine and portal of the same name is a non-profit organization. Our mission is to help Russian-speaking people adapt to new life in the US. Interviews with lawyers, doctors, teachers, businesspeople, etc. We also tell interesting stories of successful fellow citizens, and offer a good chance to find new contacts and get new perspectives. Plus, we talk about cultural events and creative people. The beauty contests “Miss Russian San Diego, Mrs. Russian California, Miss & Mrs Eastern Europe, Miss Fashionista USA were organized to support women and help them to believe in themselves!”
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
On October 21, 2021 in Scripps Seaside Forum La Jolla, a beauty contest Miss&Mister FIT including a fashion show will take place. The purpose of this event is to promote a healthy lifestyle and real beauty without restrictions in age, height, weight, and nationality. Beauty will save the world, and the concept of beauty for us is not a glossy picture. These are real women and men who live next door. Miss&Mister FIT is a Gala event with a unique show combined with a beauty contest, talent show, demonstrating collections from famous designers and performances by stellar experts. A show second to none!
