Grace Young’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with Grace Young and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Grace, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Recently going to parks has brought me so much joy! It’s so simple but so gratifying to bring a picnic to the park in the summer. Maybe some watercolor and snacks too!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Grace I’m a makeup artist/ esthetician/ and psychology student! I couldn’t decide on just one career path and passion to pursue so I’m just doing them all! I love the arts and working with people and all these vocations allow me to do both. Something that I find as a common denominator is connecting with people and marking them feel confident. I know from a makeup artists chair to therapists couch I want to make you feel confident and seen! I currently do bridal makeup specializing in a more natural soft glam style.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child it seemed that you had to choose one thing to work towards as a career path that you stayed in for your whole working life. This might have been the case in earlier generations but I’m grateful to have many friends and mentors who are multifaceted in their hobbies and careers. They have encouraged me to pursue arts and humanities in all forms that interest me and I now know I can be it all!

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
When I was a student in undergraduate program I struggled all around. I was doing too much and had a super strict timeline of where I needed to be career wise. In a period of anxiety and burnout I almost dropped out of school, and gave up on both academia and artistry. After a few failed courses I had a hard conversation with a counselor separating my self worth from my output or achievements. I cut down on my workload and completely let go of my perfect timeline and let myself figure things out one step at a time. I decided I would rather prioritize mental health and trust I would end up where I needed to be and it has hugely positively impacted my quality of life.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I hope that my closest friends know what matters to me most is relationships. I value my relationship with myself- learning to trust my gut, follow my passions, and set healthy boundaries. I also hugely value my relationships with others. Building authentic and caring community both in my personal life and in my professional life! I want my friends to feel loved and cared for and my clients to feel seen and supported!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Along with makeup artistry I am also studying psychology in hopes of being a clinician! This is a trajectory that will rake at least half a dozen years to complete and even then requires much ongoing education and growth. I know I won’t receive much financial pay off for many many years (quite the opposite) but I hope these classes further both my personal growth and eventual lead me to be a trustworthy psychologist.
