Hidden Gems: Meet Amy Salcedo of Disco Bloom Flowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Salcedo

Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My grandmother had a good friend who owned a small floral shop a few blocks away, we went there every week. That’s where I first gained interest in flowers. Filling our home with fresh flowers brought a smile to our faces and anyone who came over to visit. Being a visual learner and creative, I have always enjoyed hosting whether it was a dinner party, birthday, anything. I mostly did it because I enjoyed it and one day I thought to myself, why not make this my career? Fast forward, I’m in my thirties looking to change my career after mainly being in retail. I wanted something that allowed me to express my creativity and simply made me happy. I decided to dive into the floral business. I’m self taught with a lot to learn still but grateful for all the support I’ve had from friends and family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So far it has been as smooth as it can be. I’ve learned that there is a lot more to the floral industry than putting something together that looks pretty. You’re starting your own business from scratch, something I’m not too familiar with. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and doing research plus connecting with people has opened many doors and given me insight on it. I appreciate all the tips and tricks, I’m sure I’ll be learning more along the way!

As you know, we’re big fans of Disco Bloom Flowers. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The name of my floral business is Disco Bloom Flowers. I got the name when planning a dinner party for my birthday last year. As I searched Pinterest for inspiration, I found photos and displays that related to my personality – combining disco balls and flowers, two things my friends and family think of when they describe me. My overall mood board is bright, sparkly and fun. Disco balls also represent dancing and I go to a lot of music festivals because it brings me so much joy and creates memories I will never forget. That’s something I want to incorporate in my floral business. I want to bring happiness into someone’s day and even create a core memory. I also personally love the small things and adding small touches like my signature mini disco ball in your bouquet makes it stand out and feel more personal, letting my customers know that I’m putting a piece of me into everything I create. I currently create bouquets, arrangements and hope to expand into events as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Honestly, the little things. I personally pay attention to that in my friends and family and love when someone does the same for me. It brings a warmth to my heart and builds a deeper connection.
