Hidden Gems: Meet Anthony Kuleto of Transcend Behavioral Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Kuleto

Hi Anthony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My Medical journey came as second career. I spent eleven years in Naval Special Operations as an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Technician. This was during the early days of the Iraq war and as time went on I unfortunately lost good friends and saw first hand the role of doctors in helping those who came home with wounds, seen and unseen. Once in medicine however it was on my rotations at Rady Children’s Hospital that I found my calling. In residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego I discovered Developmental Pediatrics and was introduced to some amazing mentors, including the world famous Dr Kazlauskas who helped me see that the role of the developmental pediatrician was to help the family system not just the child.

Over the years, I built a diverse career—not only as a board-certified developmental pediatrician but also as a small business owner, consultant, and thought leader in behavioral health. I along with my business partners recently became the owners of Transcend Behavioral Health, formerly Transcend Therapy. They already had a stellar reputation for compassionate, and community orientated mental health treatment . Our goal with the purchase was not to replace but expand on the already valued and important work that the team had been doing. My contribution is a focus on integrative, evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and disruptive behavior disorders.

Beyond clinical work, I have two adult children in college and co-manage the business with my wife who runs the day to day operations.

Balancing my medical practice, my hobbies are Surfing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Snowboarding. I love to cook, read, and travel with my wife and kids. I am a die hard Padres fan, and think that San Diego is the greatest city on earth.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Going back to medical school in my 30s was tough, especially with two young kids at home.My wife literally kept us going for the almost 10 years it took me to get through medical school and residency. Financially it was tight and my schedule was unpredictable, but, we were never alone. We had a fantastic community of friends and family who always rallied around us and helped us out when times were tough. Because of that we built a connection to this community that feels so integral to who we are as people and business owners. Now we feel like this is our opportunity to give back some of that help that we received.

We’ve been impressed with Transcend Behavioral Health, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a dedicated team of therapists, educators, and medical professionals passionate about delivering high-quality mental health care. Our behavioral health collective offers a wide range of services, including tailored therapy for adults, children, and families, child and adolescent medication management, and expert diagnoses for conditions such as autism, ADHD, and developmental delays. We also provide parent coaching and other tailored support. Our clinicians have such a diversity of experiences that whatever challenges clients face there is a clinician that understands and can offer personalized support. Also there are very few true ADHD specialists in San Diego who are experts in the both the medication and lifestyle management of that condition.

How do you define success?
First I don’t think success is a destination, it is a process. Success is being able to take your strengths and find a way, whatever that is, to use them to make others lives better. By asking for and providing help along the way, you will cultivate relationships that will be the catalyst for enduring meaning in your life.
