Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Baker
Hi Ashlee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started the University Heights Women’s Walk group because, even as someone who’s lived in San Diego my whole life, I found it surprisingly hard to form meaningful connections in my own neighborhood. Over time, friends moved away, and I realized I really missed having a local community of women to share experiences with—whether that meant going for a walk, grabbing coffee, or just having someone nearby to spend time with.
I tried joining a larger walking group once, and while it was a good experience, it didn’t feel personal. The group was spread out across the city, and I wanted something more local—something where it didn’t take a 30-minute drive to feel connected. When I mentioned the idea of starting my own group to someone I met there, she said, “If you do it, I’ll come!” That was the encouragement I needed.
I spent a weekend putting together an Instagram page and a simple calendar, and we started with just two walks a month. Since then, it’s grown into something I never could’ve imagined—a thriving community with a leadership team, over 30 volunteers, and partnerships with local businesses. We’ve hosted trivia nights, happy hours, yoga in the park, and holiday potlucks. But more than that, we’ve built a space where women can show up, feel welcome, and make genuine connections.
What’s been especially meaningful for me is seeing how many real friendships have come out of this group. I love seeing the girls hanging out together even outside of the walks—grabbing dinner, going to events, or just supporting each other in their day-to-day lives. That’s really what it’s all about. And even the improv walks where someone just posts in the group chat to see who’s around are so much fun.
We’ve created this culture where it’s easy to reach out, ask questions, and be there for each other, and I think that’s absolutely wonderful. Looking back, I’m so glad I took that first step. What started as a simple idea has turned into something truly meaningful—for me and, I hope, for the women who’ve joined along the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting the group was really exciting for me it felt like a fun hobby, but it also took a lot of time and effort. I enjoyed doing it, but there were definitely struggles along the way. In the beginning, one of the biggest challenges was consistency just getting people to come back regularly. It was something I worried about, but over time, more and more women kept showing up, and now we have this amazing group of people who come when they can. I love that there’s no pressure—whether someone comes once or becomes a regular, they’re always welcome.
I also realized pretty quickly that I couldn’t do everything on my own, especially when I started my master’s program. If the group was going to keep growing, I needed help and I was so touched by how many people stepped up. Women volunteered to lead more walks, make graphics, reach out to businesses, organize events, and even help with the group chat. It became less about me and more about all of us working together, which honestly made the group even better.
What’s been especially rewarding is seeing how people have grown whether it’s stepping into leadership roles, building friendships, or just showing up for each other. I’ve seen women in the group help each other move, give rides, and just be there when someone needs support. Even if someone can’t lead a walk, someone else jumps in. If we need a flyer, someone makes it. There’s always this spirit of stepping up and helping out, and I think that’s what makes this group so special.
Looking back, it hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been so worth it. Seeing the group grow into this supportive and welcoming space has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’re the University Heights Women’s Walk Group, a welcoming and supportive social group focused on building connections, promoting wellness, and creating a sense of community. While we started in University Heights, we’re open to anyone, no matter where they’re from. We’ve had people join us from all over San Diego from North County to East and South County and even beyond.
What sets us apart is that we’re more than just a walking group. We offer a wide range of activities, like yoga in the park, beach days, camping trips, moon circles, meditation walks, and even improv walks. We love getting creative with our events and make it a point to ask for feedback and ideas so everyone feels included. People step up to lead walks or events they’re passionate about, which keeps things fresh and exciting.
We’re also proud to support local businesses, partnering with them and helping to bring the community together. One thing we’re especially proud of is keeping the ostrich as part of our logo it’s a nod to University Heights’ history and a fun symbol that represents our roots.
At the end of the day, we’re a group that’s all about connection whether it’s forming friendships, supporting each other, or just having fun. And I think that’s what makes us so special.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success for our group by the connections and support it fosters. Whether someone joins just one event and leaves feeling welcomed or becomes a regular and builds lasting friendships, that’s success to me. I’ve seen people show up for each other not just at events, but in life offering advice, helping with moves, and even spending holidays together when family isn’t nearby.
It’s not about numbers; it’s about creating a space where people feel supported, included, and cared for. Seeing those friendships grow and knowing the group has become a source of connection and community is what makes it all worthwhile.
