Today we’d like to introduce you to Boris Buecker.
Hi Boris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 1987 I visited the United States for the first time and fell in love. My father was send to New York City, Manhattan on an assignment by his Bank for the period of 8 month and I had a chance to visit him for a couple of weeks. A few years past and my second destination within the USA was Laguna Beach. Back in Germany I was an avid bike rider and our team typically escaped in the winter month for one or two training camps to either Italy or Mallorca, Spain. One year a team mate suggested Laguna, California as his family had a contact there that would host us.
From the moment I landed on California soil I could not get enough of this beautiful state. Riding daily on coast highway going up to Los Angeles or down to San Diego was so invigorating that i kept coming back to visit several times in the following years. In 1991 i visited a Real Estate office as a German friend wanted to invest in a townhouse in Laguna. The Realtor on duty was very helpful with information and also introduced me to my future wife. The receptionist at the Real Estate office took German in college and an introduction was made. The following year we moved to Berlin as she wanted to perfect her German language and what is better then to be immersed in a country that speaks the language.
We returned to California in 1993 and got married. I had two personal goals i wanted to fulfill the first year, one to become a Pilot and the second to get my Scuba certification, both I obtained.
I started working for a German company in Irvine, Ca for the next 6 years in International Sales and Marketing. My job was in the special product division and that allowed me to travel national and international visiting clients, vendors and trade shows all over the globe. This occupation was totally different from what I did in Germany as a contractor and in design.
In 2000 a close friend i trained with for Triathlons ask me if I was interested in joining him at Prudential Ca Realty as a Realtor. I accompanied him to an oceanfront open house in Laguna Beach and my love for Real Estate was born. Over the next few month i obtained my license and joined him and his team.
For the next couple of years I worked in the Monarch Beach office as a Realtor before moving to Del Mar where I joined another Prudential office. Growing up a our family in Europe traveled a lot and I was very fortunate to experience countries, languages, styles and the intricacies of different cultures. One thing i was always interested in was architecture and Europe provided lots of it in different forms and styles. Even though many buildings, castles are hundreds or even thousands of years old my passion was for modern architecture. The clean lines and clearly defined spaces fascinated me. As early as 1896 Otto Wagner an Austrian architect predicted an architecture of “horizontal lines….and great simplicity”.
It was in Europe that the early work of three outstanding architect, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier would lay the foundations of Modernism’s worldwide Influence. In 1919 Walter Gropius was appointed director of the famous German Bauhaus.
I quickly started concentrating my focus on the marketing and sales of design led properties in San Diego. Working with owners and buyers of such properties is a different experience as they are truly invested in the building and it is not just a box that keeps the rain out. Finding common ground over design, materials and architecture sets these transaction apart from regular Real Estate sales. It takes a different approach marketing architectural homes as only appx 8% of buyers would consider a modern/contemporary or mid century modern dwelling.
Over the years I built a strong network of architecture brokers and agents all over the world and we are cross marketing our clients properties. In addition I work closely with publications such as Dwell Magazine, Atomic Ranch, Rob Report and various others to market my clients homes. I was also features in Dwell Magazine as the go to Realtor in San Diego for modern/contemporary homes, the articles title ” Realtors who choose Modernism over McMansions”
Selling and marketing architectural homes is truly a passion and never gets old. I am very lucky to be able to meet so many talented architects and designers, home owners and builders. Every transaction is different and comes with different challenges however that is the interesting aspect of Real Estate. You have to be a consultant, problem solver and adapt to different situations every day, it never gets old and that is why i enjoy this work so much.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles was the housing downturn around 2008. So many homes were foreclosed on and many people lost their homes due to adjusting loans they could not re-pay. These days the relatively high interest rates combined with record home values also pose a challenge as many peoples income did not rise as fast as houses appreciated over the last few years and especially during the Covid years.
As you know, we’re big fans of Modern San Diego Properties. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Modern San Diego Properties is engaging in the marketing and sale of design led properties. Properties that are designed by architects and designers with the input of the builder or future owner. It is a lengthy, involved process that requires patience, drive and perseverance. Because of this process the owners are usually very invested in the dwelling and that makes it such a joy working with them.
As alluded in my intro text I built a worldwide network of like minded Realtors and Brokers that specialize in the sale and marketing of modern/contemporary architectural homes. In addition we utilize our proprietary and custom build mailing and emailing data base to other design and architecture aficionados. We market and were mentioned in magazines such as Dwell, Atomic Ranch and Rob Report. I, Boris Buecker was mentioned as the GO TO Realtor by Dwell Magazine for modern/contemporary homes in San Diego. The articles name was “Realtors who choose Modernism over Mc Mansions”.
Selling design led properties requires thinking out of the box and we utilize unique methods to do so. With 20.000 licensed Realtor in San Diego alone sellers have many choices so you need to set yourself apart. The core flow in a Real Estate transaction cannot be changed however everything around it can be uniquely designed to create an elevated experience and results for the client.
What’s next?
To grow the business and come up with and find new creative and interesting ways to market and sale design led homes and architecture.
