Hidden Gems: Meet C.C. Clark and Noah Spickelmier of Sun and Soil Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to C.C. Clark and Noah Spickelmier.

Hi C.C. and Noah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
C.C.: We both went to UC Davis, and Noah, who studied food science, came up with the idea for Sun and Soil. When he told me about his idea, I knew we had to do it–we both had a strong interest in health, food, and the environment, and I knew about the podcasting industry and how to go about making one after working for a couple of them throughout college. While at Davis, we made one mini-episode but took a pause for the summer. Sun and Soil really got going in the Fall of 2022, after we moved down to San Diego. We started working hard on outlining episodes, reaching out to professors and business owners (most of which are local) in the food industry and got all the proper podcasting equipment. After our first episode edited (about Kelp with Dr. Matthew Edwards from SDSU–check it out) was finished, we knew we had created something special–a platform for people in this field to talk about the things they are the most passionate about. We’re still in the beginning phases of the project but have already learned a great deal about how to conduct interviews, how to reach out to total strangers asking to talk, how to market a show, and even how to edit/engineer the audio. We are a team of two, and producing a show is a lot of work, but it is work that is rewarding and exciting–we can’t wait to see where the podcast will go!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Noah: Making a podcast from scratch is still a new process for us both, and at times the learning curve is a tad daunting. Both C.C. and I work full-time in addition to making the podcast. We find that our biggest difficulties have been outreach and scheduling people we want to interview. Persistence has been key in regards to outreach. We know that the entire process will become easier with time, and we looking forward to the future bumps in the road and all!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sun and Soil Podcast?
We are a podcast all about food, agriculture, and the environment. We tell interesting stories about the food industry and the people in it through interview segments, thoroughly researched mini-episodes, etc. Our goal is to cover as many unique topics as possible that relate to our theme–which covers quite a bit! If you are at all interested, I would suggest giving our show a listen–hopefully you’ll learn something new!

Any big plans?
We have big goals for the podcast. First off, we want to continue to highlight important stories. That is the heart of what we seek to do. We want to act as a medium for people to learn about food, agriculture, and environmentalism in a way that informs and empowers their lives. Secondly, it would be amazing to interview high-profile people within the industry such as: Michael Pollan (writer and food journalist) as well as GT-Dave (of Synergy Kombucha). And finally, we want to have more adventures with the podcast. We have already got to explore all over San Diego County for interviews, and we cannot wait for all the future adventures!
