Today we’d like to introduce you to Darin Chaffee.
Hi Darin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into real estate has been anything but conventional. I’m originally from upstate New York and, as a young adult, I struggled with mental health and substance abuse. I first got into real estate in South Carolina back in 2008, but when the market crashed, I had to pivot. I moved back to New York, earned a business degree, and spent the next decade in project management in the energy industry.
But in 2022, my life changed forever. I was involved in a tragic car accident that deeply shook me. I became isolated, overwhelmed with guilt, and turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms. This eventually led to the loss of my marriage and a DUI in 2024.
That moment forced me to face myself honestly. I left my career of 11 years, moved to Southern California, and entered a recovery program that completely transformed me—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I rediscovered my faith, my purpose, and my passion for serving others.
In April, I earned my real estate license and immediately started building relationships and serving my community. Today, I’m in a loving relationship, surrounded by positive people, and working in a field where I get to help others every day. They say when you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life—that’s exactly how I feel now. I’m grateful for every part of this journey that led me here.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road—and honestly, I’m grateful for that now. My journey has been full of personal struggles, from battling mental health and addiction in my early years to surviving life-changing events that forced me to reevaluate everything. One of the hardest moments was a tragic accident in 2022 that left me carrying deep guilt and shame, which led to isolation, overworking, excessive drinking, and eventually the breakdown of my marriage.
Hitting rock bottom with a DUI in 2024 was a turning point—it forced me to get honest with myself and seek real help. Leaving a stable 11-year career to focus on recovery and start over in Southern California wasn’t easy. I had to rebuild not only my career but my identity, faith, and sense of purpose. But every struggle shaped me into the person I am today—stronger, more focused, and genuinely motivated to serve and connect with others through real estate.
As you know, we’re big fans of First Team Real Estate. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a local Realtor with First Team Real Estate in Southern California, my business is built on authentic relationships, trust, and service. I specialize in helping first-time homebuyers, sellers, and investors navigate the ever-changing real estate market with clarity and confidence. Whether someone is relocating, upgrading, or making their very first purchase, my focus is always on understanding their unique needs and helping them achieve their goals without pressure or confusion.
What sets me apart is my personal journey. I’ve faced real adversity—and because of that, I know how to walk beside people during what can be some of the biggest, most stressful moments of their lives. My clients are never just transactions; they’re people I care about and fight for. I bring honesty, patience, and grit to every deal, and I believe that makes all the difference.
What I’m most proud of is the integrity of my brand. I’ve rebuilt my life with hard work, faith, and service at the core—and that flows into my business. I want readers to know: if you’re looking for someone who genuinely has your back, who listens, and who will go the extra mile to make sure you feel confident and cared for in your real estate journey—that’s what I offer. This is more than a career for me; it’s a calling to help people build their next chapter, just as I’ve built mine.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think risk is essential to growth. Every major turning point in my life has come from taking a risk—whether it was leaving upstate New York to chase opportunity, stepping into the real estate industry right before the 2008 market crash, or more recently, making the decision to walk away from an 11-year corporate career to completely start over in Southern California. That was probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken—leaving behind stability, income, and familiarity to focus on my recovery, rebuild my life, and pursue my passion in real estate.
But what I’ve learned is that the greatest risks often lead to the greatest rewards. Without taking that leap of faith, I wouldn’t have the life, relationships, or purpose I have today. I don’t see risk as something to fear—it’s something to respect, to weigh carefully, and then to face with courage when you know it’s necessary for growth.
In real estate, risk is part of the process—for clients making huge life decisions, and for me as I build my business. My job is to help others see risk clearly, manage it wisely, and feel confident moving forward. Risk, when handled with faith and preparation, becomes opportunity.
