Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Amanda King. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Diamond D Feed was purchased by the Mattia family in 2008. David King was a local professional hay delivery driver, and was friends with the managers, Matt Mattia and Billy Fowler. In 2022, David left his career and sold his house in order to become a partner alongside the Mattia family. Amanda King, David’s wife, began working behind the counter and building relationships with the local community. David took up deliveries and now delivers hay to many local and neighboring ranches and farms. In less than a year’s time, the King family has effectively doubled the business’ size and remained a staple of the community, providing a valuable service to the people of Ramona.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In order to become partners in Diamond D Feed, the King family sold their house, and David King quit his longtime career of delivering hay across Southern California. Huge sacrifices were made by the King family in order to become a part of Diamond D. Their sacrifices have paid off, though, and the King family has become familiar with the business and are happy finally working for themselves and achieving financial independence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Diamond D specializes in feed for horses and livestock, as well as small animal food, including dogs, cats, exotic birds, and more. Diamond D are a major hay provider for the Ramona community, and David King delivers hay all across Ramona and its neighboring cities. Diamond D is completely family owned and managed by the owners themselves. This creates a strong sense of community within the store, as all of its customers are considered family. Diamond D was not originally owned by the Mattias and had been an active store for decades before then. The King family revitalized the business with new logos, efficient advertising, and major community outreach via local fairs, magazines, and social media.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
We feel that our strong sense of community is most important to our success. As a small mom-and-pop shop, we rely on our community to keep us in business. If we did not form the strong bonds we do with our customers, we would just be yet another pit stop in a sea of feed stores here in Ramona. Building relationships with our recurring customers, as well as their referrals, has enabled us to become a staple in the community and expand the business further and further while still maintaining the close, familial atmosphere we work so hard to curate.
