Hi Deanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My journey into founding DeCosimo Law began when I first became an attorney. It was during this time that I quickly realized the shortcomings of the traditional approach to estate planning.
Many clients would come to my office seeking help after the passing of a loved one, only to discover that their supposedly established living trusts had never been funded. In essence, they had spent money on what turned out to be a useless stack of papers.
Whether they had worked with a law firm or a trust mill, the outcome was sadly similar. Clients would receive their documents, place them on a shelf at home, and mentally check off “estate planning done,” never to revisit them. There was no oversight to ensure that trusts were properly funded or that plans were periodically reviewed. Yet, laws change, family dynamics evolve, and assets shift. Estate planning cannot be a one-time event.
Witnessing this widespread issue, I recognized a gap in the industry. I saw countless individuals who couldn’t recall their attorney’s name, let alone receive ongoing support and guidance. This realization fueled my determination to one day open my firm and redefine estate planning.
For me, estate planning is not merely about preparing documents—it’s about advocating for and empowering my clients. I strive to become their trusted advisor, forging enduring relationships with them and their families. My goal is to ensure that their wishes are honored, their loved ones supported, and their plans customized to suit their circumstances.
Driven by my experiences in the nonprofit sector and a passion for making a meaningful difference in people’s lives, I made the decision to “hang my own shingle.” This move was fueled by a desire to provide comprehensive, ongoing estate planning services and to accommodate the flexibility of spending extended periods abroad with my husband’s family. At DeCosimo Law, my mission is to deliver personalized, effective estate planning solutions that truly serve the needs and aspirations of my clients.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my firm, DeCosimo Law, posed its own set of challenges. From setting appropriate pricing structures to overcoming my introverted nature in client acquisition, I faced obstacles that required perseverance and adaptation. Financial setbacks and the learning curve of running a business added further complexity to the journey.
Despite these challenges, I remained committed to transforming estate planning into a proactive and client-centered practice. Overcoming each obstacle has been instrumental in shaping my approach and reinforcing my dedication to advocating for my client’s best interests.
In summary, my path has been marked by challenges and setbacks, but each hurdle has been an opportunity for growth and refinement, ultimately leading to the establishment of a thriving and impactful estate planning practice.
