Today we’d like to introduce you to Deb Schrakamp.
Hi Deb, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I made the move to La Jolla after raising our three daughters in the Bay Area, looking for a community that truly reflected the lifestyle we envisioned for this next chapter—walkability, a strong sense of community, and easy access to the outdoors. La Jolla checked every box, and it quickly felt like home.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked in sales, management, and marketing, so transitioning into real estate felt like a natural fit. We’ve personally bought and sold many homes over the years, and I’ve always been fascinated by the inner workings of the real estate world—from the strategy behind each transaction to the emotional journey clients experience along the way.
What ultimately drew me in was the people. I’m genuinely driven by helping others, and there’s nothing more rewarding than guiding clients through one of the most important decisions of their lives and seeing them find a home they truly love. Real estate allows me to combine my professional background with my passion for connection, and that’s what makes this work so meaningful to me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many in real estate, one of the biggest challenges is navigating a constantly shifting market. Interest rates, inventory, and buyer sentiment can change quickly, and each shift requires a different strategy. It keeps me on my toes and pushes me to stay informed so I can guide my clients with confidence.
Another challenge is helping clients manage the emotional side of the process. Buying or selling a home is deeply personal, and there can be moments of stress, uncertainty, or even disappointment. I see it as part of my role to be a steady, supportive presence—someone who not only understands the market, but also understands people.
Real estate is also highly competitive, especially in a market like La Jolla, which means consistently showing up at a high level, building trust, and delivering results. While that can be demanding, it’s also what motivates me. I truly enjoy rising to the challenge and finding ways to create a smooth, successful experience for my clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Modern Homes Team at Compass?
What I love most about real estate is the people and the relationships that come with it. I truly enjoy getting to know my clients, understanding what “home” means to them, and helping them find a place that fits their lifestyle. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being part of such an important milestone in someone’s life. I also love the variety—no two days or transactions are ever the same—and the opportunity to be creative when it comes to marketing and positioning a home.
On the flip side, the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of real estate can be challenging at times. Deals don’t always go as planned, and there can be moments that require patience, problem-solving, and a steady hand. It can also be tough when clients feel discouraged in a competitive market. But even those challenges reinforce why I do what I do—because helping people navigate those moments and ultimately succeed is what makes it all worthwhile.
