Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Toinette E. Watson of Wombs of Angels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Toinette E. Watson.

Dr. Toinette E. Watson, Ed.D.

Hi Dr. Watson, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was 17 years old, I had a miscarriage. Shortly after the miscarriage and several exams, a physician told me that I would have a difficult time getting pregnant, and if I was to get pregnant the chances of a successful pregnancy were slim. This news crushed me. I was 17 years old and didn’t know to seek a second opinion. I carried this with me. Never in my wildest dreams did I know I would not only birth my own child but also children for other families. This blows my mind every time I think about it.

In 2016, my wife and I decided to begin researching our options for having a baby. We were so overwhelmed by the amount of information we received. We made a decision and on December 31st, 2017, I gave birth to our daughter.

I was amazed by the happiness and the many ways she transformed our lives, and I wanted to give that to another family. Someone graciously gave an intimate piece of themselves, and my family was blessed. I wanted other deserving couples to experience that same joy.

In 2019, choosing to become a gestational surrogate was the moment I knew I was living in my purpose, on purpose, and with great purpose. In 2020, I birthed a beautiful baby boy who now lives with his loving family in France. That journey was so amazing and rewarding that I decided to lend my womb to another family. On May 19th, 2022, I gave birth to another beautiful baby girl, and she lives right here in my hometown San Diego, California. I birthed 3 babies, I birthed 3 families, I birthed a brand from pure passion.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The greatest hurdle is convincing others to believe in Wombs of Angels as much as I do. Building a brand goes beyond having an idea and having enough money to actualize the vision. I’m dedicated to surrogacy advocacy and postpartum recovery. Therefore, my vision also includes building and maintaining relationships with others in this space.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for networking is to get involved in the conversations. Social media is a great platform for meeting new people, learning from others, and participating in local events. You must be patient, show yourself some grace, and remember to show up as your authentic self.
