Hidden Gems: Meet Elyse Clark of Roam Homeware

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elyse Clark.

Hi Elyse, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Roam Homeware really started as a passion project. After spending time living abroad in places like Indonesia, South Africa, and Spain, I fell in love with the beauty and soul of handmade, reclaimed, and vintage pieces. I wanted to bring that sense of story and adventure home — and share it with others.

What started as a small idea has grown into something so much bigger. Today, we have two locations, including our flagship store in Bird Rock, La Jolla, San Diego. Both spaces are filled with carefully curated pieces — from handmade furniture and reclaimed decor to vintage treasures and a beautiful collection of art.

We also love connecting with our community through events, from Gallery Nights showcasing local and international artists to Industry Networking Nights that bring together designers, builders, and creatives. For us, Roam isn’t just a store — it’s a space to inspire, connect, and celebrate the stories behind every piece.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting Roam Homeware came with several obstacles, most notably the challenge of balancing creative vision with financial and operational realities. Sourcing unique, high-quality pieces from around the world required significant upfront investment and logistical coordination, while simultaneously building trust with customers who valued authenticity and craftsmanship. Navigating lease negotiations, staffing, and compliance with regulations added layers of complexity, as did finding ways to stand out in a crowded home décor market dominated by larger, established brands.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Roam Homeware?
Roam Homeware is a La Jolla–based home décor and furniture store specializing in globally sourced, vintage, and one-of-a-kind pieces that bring character and timeless design into modern spaces. What sets us apart is our curated approach—we don’t just sell furniture, we create an evolving collection that feels like a gallery of stories, blending reclaimed materials, artisan craftsmanship, and natural textures. Beyond retail, we offer interior design, art consulting, and styling services, allowing clients to experience our aesthetic in their homes and projects. Brand-wise, we’re most proud of building a community that values authenticity, sustainability, and thoughtful living. We want readers to know that Roam is more than a store—it’s a destination for design inspiration, unique finds, and creative collaborations.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just start! You’ll find the answers along the way if you just keep going. Don’t be afraid to ask questions along the way.
