Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Query.
Hi Garrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota, from first grade until I graduated in 2008. I was always an overweight kid. As you know, kids are pretty ruthless and have zero filters. So, being as overweight as I was, I was picked on from a very young age and never really fit in with any particular group. When I arrived in high school, I continued my football career and found the weight room. Slowly but surely, over the course of four years, my passion for clanging and banging the iron grew and grew. Once out of high school, I hired a personal trainer and I lost 60lbs with strength and conditioning work provided by my coach. Shortly before I prepared to leave for the University of Nebraska (Go Big Red!), my car broke down and my living situation abruptly changed. I took this as a sign not to leave for school. In the coming months, we lost my Mom at just 36 years old and my life went spiraling out of control. I gained every last ounce of weight back, plus interest, in a very short time as I was eating my feelings. At 19 years old, I was tipping the scales at 382lbs. One example I remember about my eating habits at the time is how I would go to Little Ceasars on my lunch breaks and eat a large pizza, an order of crazy bread, and drink half a 2 liter of soda. I quickly realized just how off-track my life had gotten and how out of control my eating habits were. This is when I knew something had to change. The only way out that I could think of at that point was gastric bypass surgery, as it’s the only way I had ever seen someone my size successfully lose the weight and keep it off. After my surgery, I successfully lost 180lbs in 18 months and began my journey in health and fitness. At about the two year mark, I decided to hire a personal trainer again as I had bigger and better goals for myself. While working with him, it became apparent that I wanted to teach people that they could achieve success in their journeys as I had. So, I began working on my certification.
In 2016, I finished it and started my first personal training business at Metroflex Fargo, aka THE MIDWEST MECCA. Metroflex Fargo gave me an incredible platform to become the best coach possible, including seminars and incredible coaches from all walks of health and fitness to challenge and better my skill set. After four years at Metroflex, I made the call to pick up everything I ever knew and move to Scottsdale, AZ. A year later, Intentional Strength Training was born. Now, here we are on the cusp of an incredible year of continuing to build an amazing community of men and women who want to learn and grow in health, fitness, and life!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe that if you have a smooth road, then you aren’t doing it right. Anything in life worth having doesn’t come easy. Cliché, I know, but it’s true. To say the road to get where I am today has been easy would be a lie. I’ve dealt with ebbs and flows of business, changes of roles and financial hardship. I maxed out credit cards and emptied my bank accounts in order to move my career forward and have opportunities in my dream city.
As you know, we’re big fans of Intentional Strength Training. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Intentional Strength Training has been five years in the making. About five to six years into training, I discovered what it means to train with Intent what it means to push yourself beyond what you believed possible. Over the past five years, I’ve strived to be the absolute best possible personal trainer/coach. I’ve spent the last two to three years learning from the best in the world. If you want to be the best at what you do, you must invest in those who are already where you want to be. Personal Training/Coaching is so much more than just reps, sets, and time under tension. It goes so much deeper than that, and it’s so important to understand basic biochemistry, physiology, stress physiology, and so many other areas of the field. Every program from Intentional Strength Training has a purpose! At Intentional Strength Training, we are building a family of athletes that show up for themselves first. Each day we train with intention and provide attention to detail. We focus on performance but also on growing mentally stronger as we physically train our bodies to achieve our goals. With Intentional Strength Training, we want to help you become the strongest version of yourself.
We focus on more than just physical appearance. With every client, we value their emotional, mental, and physical health all the same. Being a part of our family means that we lift one another up and push each other to perform at our absolute best. Training with Intentional Strength is a life-changing decision and we can’t wait to be a part of your journey. We believe that you deserve to be the strongest version of yourself and that your health is more than just physical appearance. To become strong, you need to train all aspects – emotionally, mentally, and physically. By joining our family, you will become part of a community that lifts one another up and pushes each other to perform at our absolute best. Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
All of my education outside of my base CPT has been from learning from the best in the world in the private sector. I seek out the best at my craft to learn from them directly. I’ve learned from Luke Leaman owner of Muscle Nerds Health, Eugen Teo Ganbaru Method, Joe Bennet Hypertrophy Coach, John Meadows owner of Granite Supplements Derek Dolgner #healthfirst. Also, people may not know that I grew up an avid outdoorsman. Unfortunately, I simply haven’t had the time over the past five years to continue my pursuit of those passions.
