Hidden Gems: Meet Gina Mauricio of Run With Gina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Mauricio.

Hi Gina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2004, I ran my first marathon, sustaining a fracture in both feet during training. Always wondering if it could have been prevented, a few years later I sought out a Master’s degree in kinesiology (the study of movement) to learn exercise science, physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, exercise nutrition and many more classes to help me become a knowledgeable coach.

I graduated with the master’s degree in 2015 and reached out to a local runner to see if I could get her out of the injury cycle and onto better race times. With a willing participant, we succeeded in getting her out of the injury cycle and staying out of it to this day and onto her Boston Marathon Qualifying time, a landmark goal for many recreational runners. Throughout her training with me, she would hashtag on social media #runwithgina and my business name was born.

Seven years later, I have helped runners not only local to me in San Diego County but in other parts of the U.S. get out of their injury cycle or improve their running confidence and race times on an online training platform. Despite being an online coach, the majority of my runners are local and can make appointments to see me at my workspace in Escondido for movement assessments, corrective exercises, resistance training or nutritional guidance to support their running goals.

Living San Diego County, with optimal training weather all year long, there are marathon training and triathlon training groups pounding the pavement together every weekend. Many of my local runners also belong to training groups/clubs for friends to run with, long run support and to also support the organizations. What the runner receives from me is custom and personalized training. The latter being me learning the runner, what his/her potential is and what holds them back from their goals, whether it is physical, mental or nutritional.

The majority of my runners have been running for years or took up running in their more mature years. I just returned from a marathon in Northern California with eight of my runners. Half of them were over 60. Three of them ran sub 4-hour marathons for their age graded Boston Marathon qualifying standard. Two are first time Boston Marathon qualifiers, running a seven and 27-minute personal best in the race,

2021 has been a year of learning and growth for Run With Gina (Rwg). I recently just acquired four new out of state runners for 2022 marathons, Rwg is a great choice regardless of where you live for virtual marathon training. 2022 will be the most epic year for me as a coach and for my age group runners.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Loaded question! It has not been smooth. I often acquire runners that say to me, “Everything you tell me is completely different than what other coaches and trainers have ever told me”. All of my training is backed by evidenced-based research first and anecdotal experiences last. Many coaches coach by traditions or their personal experiences as younger athletes and it just doesn’t work with my cohort of the average American, over-stressed, underslept and poorly fed for recovery and performance. I do a lot of defending of my programs.

I am also criticized by runners and coaches that do not know me and do not understand that my programs are not the same as what others provide. As much as I try to ignore the chatter, the human side of me is offended. I continue to focus on providing the best service to those that trust me with their body and the business continues to grow by word of mouth. I do not advertise or solicit runners, except for my very first runner!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in decreasing injury potential and increasing performance potential in recreation marathon runners.

What sets me apart is my personalized coaching on an online platform.

I am proud that my training program is backed by evidenced-based research. My brand logo looks like pseudo-element on the Periodic Table of Elements to represent scientific training principles.

All my services are listed on my website, but there is not an option for just anyone to sign up for training. I personally screen all inquiries that contact me from my website to make sure that we are a great fit after going through their running, injury and medical history.

What’s next?
I like the trajectory Rwg is on, which is a 10% growth each year. In the future, I will offer more in person personal training packages.
