Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Gould.
Hi Greg, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I spent 25 years in the IT industry as a database engineer. That was good to me but started to get old and the late night hours were taking me away from my family. My wife teaches pilates and a data in our daughter’s preschool wanted a lesson. During the lesson he explained a product he had come up with to keep people safe from the sun at the beach while being compact, functional and stylish. He explained he was not happy with his partner and he was thinking about giving up. We loved the idea of the product and we jumped in and bought out his partner. That was almost 10 years ago. Since then we have grown the business far beyond what we first imagined through direct to consumer (Amazon and Website) and retail (Surf Ships, REI, Dick’s Sporting Goods).
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Probably handling the growth and cash flow as are biggest challenge. When we were more than doubling every year it was all we could do just to pay our estimated tax and the rest of the money went back into the business to buy more inventory. We would also underestimate sales in the early years and when we sold of our top SKUs it really hurt because those are just sales lost.
We’ve been impressed with Neso LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We make innovative, portable and stylish outdoor products. Our hero product is our beach sunshade that comes with anchor bags which can be filled up with sand or river rocks to keep the shade anchored. If you drive around the San Diego beaches you are likely to see a few. Our compact and stylish design sets up apart from others. We are most proud of bringing to the mainstream a concept that very few people ever have seen. We also make other outdoor accessories like chairs, tables and a tote bag. We want your readers to know that we are a local small company who has done some pretty big things with worldwide distribution. We are most pride of the sleek, portable and stylish nature of our products.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always loved the beach and I became obsessed with surfing in high school. That has shaped my whole life in terms of where I travel, how much I travel, choosing a partner and where I live. I have always been a hard worker and very easy to work with.
