Hi Hamilton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Virtual Cornerstone was built out of necessity. When the pandemic hit at the same time as my graduation, my career paths were closed and I was forced to figure out a new way. So while staying home and navigating the world of masks and quarantine, I started working as a virtual assistant and began my graduate program for a Masters in Communication.
Four years later, Virtual Cornerstone has grown into a six-figure business with a team of women supporting female entrepreneurs in Content Marketing and Virtual Assistant services.
While I don’t have the common “left my 9 to 5” entrepreneur story, I have found where I belong as a business owner and am beyond grateful for the circumstances that led me here (though that might be the only good thing that came out of COVID for me).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not! Any entrepreneur who tells you it’s been easy is lying.
My business started as a side-gig which I maintained for two years while in graduate school and working full time as an office administrator (oh, and planning my wedding!). It wasn’t an instant success— it’s the result of lots of late nights, long weekends, and in-between hours.
Even after two years of building to the point of leaving my remote job (and all the security that came with it), building a business takes HARD work. I often tell my VA mentees that anyone can be a virtual assistant, as long as they’re willing to put in the work. Success doesn’t just happen. True entrepreneurship requires that you wake up nearly every day, focused on your goals, and taking action.
Entrepreneurship also requires that you rest and slow down. That has been one of the most challenging aspects of business ownership for me. I’m a go-go-go kind of person, but I’ve learned that in the moments when I slow down is when I have my best ideas, am able to be creative, and see the vision for my business and life.
The delicate dance of making ish happen and taking time to dream and create is a constant necessity in entrepreneurship. Some days it’s beautiful and other days it’s hard, but it’s all part of the journey.
