Hidden Gems: Meet Jason Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Richardson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Which time? Feels like I had many starts… I moved to San Diego in 1992 to attend the University of San Diego. When I arrived, I was already a nationally ranked amateur BMX racer that had just turned professional mid-year in 12th grade. The prospect of working part-time, the fact that I was living in SoCal, and my love for racing bikes, all pointed to me doing my best to make a go at being a professional BMX racer. Fortunately, the timing was right and I was able to forge a career as a pro racer and go to school. I graduated with my bachelor’s in 1997 and went on to get my MBA in 2000 from the University of Phoenix. All the while, I was still traveling the world to race at the highest level. In 2006, I broke the femur in my right leg. During my comeback to racing, I had the good fortune of sitting next to a couple traveling home from a psychology conference. Based on that conversation, I decided to go back to school to earn my doctorate in psychology. The thought was I could not only help athletes perform, but I could also help them manage the business of athletics, life, and life after sport. I retired from racing (for a living) in 2008 and by 2010 I earned my Doctorate in Psychology from Ryokan College and was licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in 2011. The next year I found myself on a plane headed to the 2012 London Olympics working with athletes competing in the games.

Since then, I have been able to help athletes with their Olympic dreams and Olympic medals. My interest in high performance has always transcended sports. As such, much of my work has led me to work with business leaders, entrepreneurs, and teams. If I am not working with an individual or team, I am (and love to) present on stage as a keynote speaker!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road! Going back to school in your mid-30s to become licensed as a psychologist while trying to be a good husband and dad was probably not the most ‘practical’ decision. The licensing process is slow and administratively heavy. Not to mention the (lack of) pay as an intern working to obtain my hours.

Once licensed, I spent too much time focusing on starting a business that was too traditional… for me. I was dealing with office space, leases, and insurance. When I decided to jettison the office (pre-covid) and double down on my original intent on why I decided to become a Psychologist and how I saw my business–the right work started to come through my (now non-existent) doors. However, I do think I needed to work through all of that to get me to this point both for appreciation and for the experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In short, I help athletes, executives, and entrepreneurs succeed in sports, business, and life. I am known for being able to crystalize the goal AND what it takes on a personal or team level to achieve those goals.

It’s rare that a World Champion and Pan Am Games gold Medal athlete also has an MBA and doctorate in psychology. What sets me apart from others is that I am not ‘other!’ I live the life I prescribe.

What I am most proud of brand-wise is the consistency, growth, and results. This alignment is what I work with others to achieve long-term success and personal fulfillment.

While my coaching services are limited to a few people a quarter. I would love to speak to your team or at your next conference!
