Hidden Gems: Meet Jazmyne Jenkins of Pastry By Jazmyne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmyne Jenkins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My business started during my time in Culinary School. I was a professional dancer (hip hop) living in LA at the time and was between dance jobs and my day job. I really wanted to explore the option of becoming a Pastry Chef so I enrolled myself into Culinary School. Once I took the leap. It was nowhere but up from there!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like all new business owners, it ain’t never smooth ha! There were a ton of internal struggles because I was balancing my dance career, finishing school, working full time, and being a new mom! At one point, I didn’t have a car, so getting to school from the other side of town was a mission.
I wanted to dance for the rest of my life but knew the industry may not always be for me. Becoming a Pastry Chef was a crucial step for me so I can have a business that would keep me financially stable and maybe even create a legacy for my kiddo.
Having the funds to start a business was a struggle as well. I wanted everything and right away. A dope website, a commercial kitchen, a storefront- all that. I actually had a GoFundMe to help me start my own business lmao. Shout out to the real ones who supported that cuz who does that!!!

We’ve been impressed with Pastry By Jazmyne, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed, cottage food baker and a one woman show! I specialize and am known for my Decorated Sugar Cookies but can do it all- cakes, cupcakes, dipped treats, pies, sourdough, cinnamon rolls- All OF IT! I love the way my kitchen smells in the morning. I’m an early bird so if I’m slammed with orders, it’s a smooth 3am wake up time. Coffee on deck!
What sets me apart from others I would have to say is that my main goal is always to make sure my customers are happy. I feel like some people shy away from general feedback but I truly embrace all positive and negative feedback I get. It’s the only way Imma grow my business and be better.
The thing I’m most proud of for my business is that I am doing it. I kept reaching for my goals and the wins just keep coming- big or small. I’m also proud that when I was in Los Angeles, I got to bake for some really dope gigs! I had a steady gig working for Netflix, I baked for CBS, Nickelodeon, and Ticketmaster. Even more proud that I was able to move my business back home to San Diego and that thang really took off down here!
Pastry By Jazmyne really is a brand that takes a lot of pride and dedication in what I do. You got allergies? I got you! You’re a vegan? SAY LESS!
My services range from birthday parties, corporate events, weddings, and dessert tables. You think it, I’m pretty sure I can do it!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Funny you ask- I seem to have a a ton of good luck- especially when I enter contests! I stay winning everything!
Luck has its way of finding me in everything I do. I’m lucky to have the support system I have, the friends and family who constantly assist me on store runs when I can’t seem to get my inventory right no matter how hard I try, the cousins who help me flood 300 cookies and never decorated a day in their life, folks that spread the word of who I am and what I do, and my sweet son (7) who wants to learn and help me however he can. If that ain’t lucky, I don’t know what is.
