Hidden Gems: Meet Jessica Davis of Drunken Whoopies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Davis.

Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Maine, and we always made whoopie pies. After traveling for my husband’s job, we ended up in San Diego, CA, and I would bake whoopie pies for gifts and for my husband’s co-workers. Many had never had or even heard of these delicious cake-like cookie sandwiches. I always laughed it off when I was told I should really start a business and sell my baked goods. It wasn’t until the fall of 2019 I really started taking the comments seriously. Of course, the pandemic hit, forcing me to hold off on starting the cottage food process. Finally, late in 2021, I was able to get the ball rolling and become officially certified to sell to the public. Now with the support of my husband and kids, I’ve been able to turn a hobby and take a leap into a business.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Is the road ever smooth? The baking is the easiest part of the journey but getting there was a struggle. There are many twists and turns you have to navigate through to become certified as a cottage food law-approved baker. The process is long and tedious. Everything has to be planned out and gone over many times, every I dotted and “t” crossed. The process was the biggest struggle as some of it is not as black and white as you would think. The information the city provides is great but not as complete, and I had to adjust menus and products a few times before my approval was given. It is not for the faint of heart, as they say, and you truly need to understand what you are getting into before you waste all your time and effort.

We’ve been impressed with Drunken Whoopies, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Drunken Whoopies specializes in Maine-style whoopie pies (think cake-like cookie sandwiches with a buttercream filling), macarons, and cookies. We do take custom orders, so sometimes the occasional cake or cupcake. The focus is on whoopie pies with drink-related flavors. Americano, Chai Latte, Earl Grey whoopie pies are some you can find on our menu.

What were you like growing up?
Ha growing up, I was a free spirit. I did what I wanted and made sure to carve my own path regardless of how I got there. I worked hard but was spontaneous, sassy, and always found a way to have fun. Occasionally I would bake and be a homebody. I tried to never let things get me down and try new things.
