Hidden Gems: Meet John Metzler of JohnnyCFitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Metzler.

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an early age, I developed a deep interest in the human body and performance, taking college-level courses in kinesiology and nutrition while still in high school. During my senior year, I began unofficially training friends, which ignited my passion not just for coaching, but for making an impact through movement and wellness. After graduation, I continued learning independently—diving into exercise science, program design, and behavioral psychology—while working a few in-between jobs teaching robotics and music. During that time, I also immersed myself in the entrepreneurial side of fitness: forming an LLC, building a website from scratch, and learning the foundations of branding and marketing. In May 2024, I officially launched JohnnyCFitness, offering personalized in-home training and online coaching focused on functional strength, sustainable nutrition, and helping others live healthier, more empowered lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all—it’s been a challenging journey filled with moments that often felt overwhelming. One of the toughest hurdles early on was marketing myself. As a young professional, earning the trust of clients who were often older, imposter syndrome was a constant struggle. On top of that, I dedicated countless hours to building the backend infrastructure of my business—from legal setup to website design—without seeing immediate returns. Any entrepreneur understands that success doesn’t happen overnight, but the moment I saw my checking account balance at just $14 was a pivotal one. Instead of feeling defeated, I took a screenshot and held onto the unwavering belief that with persistence and hard work, that number would soon be followed by multiple zeros. That mindset became my driving force—and a reminder that every challenge is an opportunity to grow and push forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is necessary and so worth it. Period. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my ability to have a few “don’t think just do” moments of putting comfort on the line for the future of my business years down the road. Something I take pride in is my incessant need to pursue difficult situations as opportunities for failure. Failure can always be your best friend when it comes to precise and accurate feedback you can trust. Once you let go of perfectionism, life as a whole becomes a lot more fulfilling and exciting-turning seemingly scary, heartstopping moments into moments of growth is incredible.
