Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Harner and Steve Massey
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Club Never Bored was born from a desire to bring people together for epic in-person events and activities that are both fun and health-conscious. Our journey kicked off with “Illuminetty,” a neon-lit, competitive volleyball tournament under the stars. This invite-only event quickly became our signature annual gathering in San Diego, attracting top-tier talent from across the country. Last year, we were thrilled to have AVP players fly in just for the tournament.
Since then, we’ve expanded our horizons to include corporate events and team-building activities. One of our standout moments has been hosting the annual OMG Games for the OMG Hospitality Group, where local bars like Waterbar, Ale House, and Molly’s go head-to-head in a neon Olympics-style competition. But what really fills us with pride is hosting the world’s largest neon dog party and charity event for Mission K9 at SD Dog Society. Through our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we champion the cause of rescuing retired military K9s, giving these heroic dogs the retirement they deserve.
Our team is led by:
Steven Massey, aka “Scuba Steve,” a PADI Specialty Scuba Dive Instructor and USCG Master Sea Captain, and
Josh Harner, aka “Gamemaster Josh,” an emerging AVP Professional Volleyball player, TELCOM entrepreneur, and health advocate.
Together, we’re on a mission to create epic experiences, promote healthy living, and give back to our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every great adventure has its challenges, and ours is no different. One of the hurdles we’ve faced is theft at events. One notable struggle last year, during a tournament, we had an incident where an attendee stopped someone from stealing our speakers, leading to an altercation. It was a tough lesson, but it made us more vigilant about security and ending events earlier in the night.
Balancing high-level athletes with casual players has also been a challenge. In our early days, we hosted open-invite events, but we quickly realized that mixing different skill levels wasn’t ideal. The athletes felt frustrated, and the casual players didn’t feel as welcome. Now, we focus on creating spaces where athletes can shine, with clear sign-ups based on ability levels.
Transitioning from purely volleyball tournaments to corporate events wasn’t without its bumps, but it also opened up new synergies. Our experience in organizing volleyball tournaments taught us the importance of meticulous planning, flawless execution, and clear communication—skills that have translated well into the corporate world.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Club Never Bored is more than just a business; it’s a lifestyle brand dedicated to hosting epic events, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and giving back to the community. We’re best known for our nighttime neon events that light up San Diego, whether it’s our signature volleyball tournaments or our corporate team-building experiences. Our branded hat has become a symbol of our “positive vibes” culture, and we’re proud that many in San Diego recognize us for it. What truly sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to our community, particularly through our efforts to rescue retired military K9s. We’ve built a strong, supportive community that shares our values, and we’re excited to keep growing together.
We recently competed and were accepted into an Incubator program at USC. As part of a portfolio of 120 companies, we now have the school’s backing to grow the business and help take us to the next level.
We invite everyone to join us at one of our upcoming events. And if you’re a company looking to take your team-building epic, we’re here to make it unforgettable!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Tap into your network! Our first big corporate sales came from referrals from friends. Don’t be afraid to ask for help—people are often more excited to partner with you than you might expect. Collaboration has been key to our growth, and it’s something we wish we’d embraced even earlier.
