Hidden Gems: Meet Joy VanDoren of The Lotus Flower Experience

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy VanDoren

Hi Joy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey as an Esthetician began in 2016, November 22,2016 to be exact! From the time I was a teenager I had always wanted to be in the beauty industry. I actually wanted to be a cosmetologist. But life had different plans for me and I ended up going the corporate route into retail. I had a very successful career working for PVH Corp, a company based out of the east coast. I was about 8 years into my career when I became a mother. I decided it’s best for my children to have me full time and I resigned my position. Several years would go by before I would make the decision to go back to school to become an Esthetician. It was about when my daughters were age 2 & 3 that I started breaking out with severe cystic acne. I tried everything I read about to get my acne to go away. I went to countless estheticians and used many different products without seeing any real results that lasted. I then went to several dermatologist and took many different medications, unfortunately nothing helped reduce my acne. I never had acne as a teenager and now dealing with it as an adult was horrible. If you have never suffered from acne in your life consider yourself blessed. For those who suffer from acne, even mild acne, it can be traumatic. It’s the first thing you think people see when the meet you. It’s very painful and you feel so ugly. I would never go out of the house without a full face of makeup on, even when I would just be going to the gym. I was very self conscience, insecure and nothing was helping! I decided, if my acne was going to go away I was going to have to figure it out! Now back to November 22,2016… I remember like it was yesterday. This was my first day in beauty school learning to be an esthetician. I was determined to learn everything I could about the skin, specifically about how to treat acne. I wanted to help myself get rid of the acne and then help others who struggle as well. And that’s when Joy Esthetics was born. I started building my business while simultaneously in school at Bellus Academy in Poway, Ca. I was licensed in July of 2018 and for 2 years I operated my practice out of my home. In 2018 I took 73 clients that I built by word of mouth to a commercial location.
My taglines were “Where passion and positivity, meet desired results!” and “Bring your inner joy out.”
I had made up my mind that I was going to approach practicing skin different then every other esthetician I had been to before.
If you have had a facial before then you’ve probably experienced where the esthetician starts by pointing out everything she thinks is wrong with your face under magnification. It’s not a fun feeling to have your flaws pointed out by a complete stranger. So I decided to do it differently. Instead of pointing out the negative, I directed my focus to the positive. Then I would ask my clients what they wanted to improve on? I had a mind, body, and soul approach to esthetics. I had positive affirmations on the walls of my practice and would encourage my clients in a positive way. If you feel good on the inside it emanates outwardly. I made sure I was always in a positive frame of mind when working on a client. Making sure to put my own stress aside and only focusing on the present. I of course specialized in acne. And also, advanced treatments like hdyradermabrasion and chemical peels.
I ended up moving my practice several times over the years. I practiced esthetics with three things in mind: passion, positivity and delivering results. This brings us to early 2020 and my practice was thriving, No one could have predicted what was about to happen to our country, to the world as a matter of fact. Our lives changed forever on March 19,2020, governor Newsom issued the stay-at-home order where all non-essential businesses were ordered to close, and people were advised to stay at home and avoid going out. This would be my last day open only I didn’t know it. It was very difficult to make that decision but I had say goodbye to Joy Esthetics. I was devastated and in tears because of the closure. I could’t help but to kept thinking… of all the clients I wouldn’t get to see anymore. Of all time I spent building my practice. All the hours I spent away from my children. All the money I had invested. The blood, sweat and tears of building my practice over the past years… was gone, just like that!
It took time and I eventually came to peace about the closure of Joy Esthetics. I was unfortunately out of work for 2 years working in any industry that I could get hired in. But nothing could fill the void. I missed esthetics, I missed being an esthetician. That brings us to present day and my second chance to build from the ground up. It’s called The Lotus Flower Experience. “Where it’s more then a facial, it’s an experience!”
I absolutely love being an esthetician. I love working with clients and helping them achieve the best versions of themselves. It’s my art! I create all the protocols for my treatments and customize every facial for each individual client. No two treatments are the same. Because not all skin is the same. I am able to focus on delivering results and relaxation in the same treatment Usually it one or the other for most places. My treatments are a minimum of 60 minutes per treatment, usually more to truly be able to address my clients concerns. I also treat my clients who refer me to their family and friends! But don’t just take my word for it… you be the judge. The Lotus Flower Experience…Where it’s more then a facial, it’s an experience!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was very shy. It seems crazy now… cause after talking to me I am anything but shy. Both my parents owned small business in the town I grew up in Lake Arrowhead, CA. I started working at a very young age in my dads telescope shop called Sky Scientific. That’s where I get my entrepreneur mindset from. I always knew I wanted to own my own business. I have actually owned a handful of business in my adult life.
