Hidden Gems: Meet Joyce Gerber of Health Is An Inside Job

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Gerber.

Joyce, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The story of how I got my start in the health field is quite funny! When I was 20 years old, I took my first steps towards independence by moving out of my parent’s house in New York, my hometown, and going to Miami Beach, where I had been for a week the year before. When I arrived there, I got a place to live, and I got a job. I used to hitchhike to get around. One day, someone named Johnny (whose last name, to this very day, I do not know) gave me a ride, and it turned out that he was absolutely passionate about health and nutrition. He brought me to my first health food store and restaurant, and I was totally smitten! I loved the food, and I read everything I could get my hands on. The connection between health and nutrition made total sense to me, and I was hooked from that moment on.

After two years, I moved back to New York. I kept reading about health, changed my diet, and discovered that a friend of mine was going to massage school. At this point, that sounded like a good step for me, because by then, I knew that I wanted to work in the health field. I also knew that I did not want to study the traditional allopathic medicine approach to working with the body. Massage therapy made sense, because I knew that I would have a year long course of study in anatomy and physiology, and that I would have a license. I knew this was important, because with this level of training, and with a license, people would have confidence in me, and would trust me working on their bodies.

I went on to become certified in other forms of massage; shiatsu and reflexology, as well as in herbology, iridology, and neuro-linguistic programming, which is a therapeutic tool for behavioral change.. I then did a very significant certification in colon hydrotherapy, which really added a brand new dimension to my work. A few years after that, I had very important nutritional trainings and certifications that changed my life, with some of the nutrition masters of the day; people like Dr. Bernard Jensen, Ann Wigmore, Annemarie Colbin, and Dr. Gabriel Cousens.

With this solid foundation under me, I have been able to offer people naturopathic and functional medicine approaches to health that I know are the solutions to today’s health challenges. Detoxification and regenerative nutrition are two of the most powerful tools to create and maintain health, and to reverse dis-ease, and these are my specialties.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finances were a challenge, and when I was studying, I was not taught marketing or business practices. If I had been, that would have made a huge difference. You can have incredible skills, but if you don’t know how to translate that to the marketplace, and make people recognize that they need what you have, you are missing a very important piece. A person needs to easily understand how what you offer is the solution to his/her problem. Learning how to present oneself to the world is very important.

We’ve been impressed with Health Is An Inside Job, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a virtual, online business, although I am available to meet with people in person as well. I specialize in offering alternatives to drugs and surgery, using food as medicine, helping people create and sustain an ongoing, healthy lifestyle, and making health simple, fun, and delicious. What sets me apart is my support system, where I help people from the initial step of embarking on a detoxification program that really cleanses their bodies, to leading them, over the months, into creating a daily, healthy, enjoyable lifestyle that they can live with. Anyone can share information, but it is the ongoing support, and helping someone implement the information, that is essential! That is something unique that I offer.

From Detoxification, to A Guided Tour Through The Health Food Store, to Setting Up A Healthy Kitchen, to Healthy Meals And Recipes, with my Healthy Movement plan, and my Ongoing Support Program, I hold your hand through it all. My Extreme Health In 90 Days is my comprehensive signature program.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love deep connections with people. I love when I can support a person who truly wants to transform his/her health. I’m excited that I have the tools to help people who are “tired of being sick and tired”, and I love empowering them.

I love being in nature, singing, dancing, playing guitar, and song and poetry writing. I love doing things that support my health, including bike rides and yoga.

Ultimately, I know that happiness comes from within, just as health does. Learning to connect with one’s Source energy, his/her life force, is really where peace, joy, and fulfillment emanate from, so creating health for oneself must include a practice to experience this. I’m always happy to share resources and practices with my patients that I know will uplift them, and improve the quality of their day-to-day lives.
