Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Conley.
Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have three children. When my oldest was a junior in high school in 2015, we started discussing college. My daughter’s friends were also discussing college with me. I became involved with the search, selection and application process helping all of them. Following this, the very next year, my other daughter started on her college journey. I assisted her and started to learn more about the complexity of the college application process. At that time, I wanted to return to work for myself and decided to get a certificate in College Counseling from UCSD extension in 2019 so that I could create my own business. I started off with just a few clients. I also had my third child, my son, looking into college. While assisting my son, I traveled to a bunch of schools and I expanded my knowledge base and gained even more insight. By 2020 I was taking on more and more students at each grade level in high school. At this time, I have a full-time job working with around 45 students a year as a College Consultant.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say overall it has been a smooth path to my success today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about KC College Consulting?
I work hard to develop a rapport with my students. They need to trust me and believe that I am going to assist them and support them in the college-going process. The relationship I have with each of my students allows us to get through all of the steps to reach the goal of having a balanced college list and to get through all of the requirements to apply to each of those schools.
I ensure that my students own their journey and that they drive the process. When they are juniors and seniors in high school they are just beginning to see life after high school and it can be intimidating. I discuss with them what college can look like and how to evaluate what schools would be a good fit for them.
I am proud of the fact that I put a great deal of effort into each student’s experience, taking the stress off of the families. I offer a personalized approach to help my students decided on their final choice of university with confidence.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have developed a very good understanding of family dynamics and how my students develop their self image leading them to pursue their goals in higher education.
