Hidden Gems: Meet Kevin Breedlove of Native Species

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Breedlove.

Kevin Breedlove

Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I graduated from San Diego State with a degree in Marketing and began my career as a self-taught graphic designer. Later, I pursued a Masters in Branding from the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Along the way, I built a creative agency and had the opportunity to develop brands for both clients and myself for over a decade. A professional opportunity drew me back to San Diego, and it was here that the idea for Native Species was born.

Both my wife and I are native San Diegans, and now we have a son who is too. Over the years, we’ve enjoyed living in and exploring the diverse neighborhoods that make up the city. From our laid-back beaches, each with its own distinct vibe, to the urban environments of Downtown and beyond, countless unique pockets contribute to the one-of-a-kind feeling that is San Diego.

Native Species celebrates this great city and anyone who has a connection to it. It’s a brand infused with SD pride, fashion-forward style, local fauna and flora, and designs that reflect the friendly and bright demeanor of the place we call home.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has not been entirely smooth. One significant challenge has been finding manufacturers who are committed to the high level of quality and attention to detail our brand requires. It involves extensive sampling to perfect our products before they can be produced. Starting up also required a solid commitment, especially in the early stages when it was just my wife and me. We handled everything from design to website development, marketing, packing boxes, and all the other tasks necessary. While it may be a small business, the investment of time is massive.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
——- WHAT READERS SHOULD KNOW

As a brand, Native Species taps into the feeling of home. Home can mean different things to different people, but ultimately, it’s the place you feel a strong, authentic connection to. A forever feel-good spot where you vibe with the people and environment. Our aim is to embody this sense of belonging and hometown pride, making our products a bridge to the communities people hold dear.

WHAT WE’RE CURRENTLY STOKED ON

It’s rewarding to see our hats worn by people who love San Diego, whether they’re natives, current or former residents, or just passing through. We’re hearing stories from all over the country about how a Native Species hat has sparked conversations about San Diego and the connections that have formed as a result.

WHAT’S NEXT

Looking ahead, we plan to add more neighborhood-specific designs, launch a collection featuring local artists, and continue expanding our product lines to further capture San Diego’s spirit. We’re also experimenting with new and interesting materials, such as recycled water bottles and textiles, to push further into sustainable practices that align with our personal ethos.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Our community has really helped get us off the ground. They’ve supported us by purchasing hats for themselves, as gifts for family and friends connected to San Diego, and by engaging with our social media posts. Their efforts in spreading the word and advocating for our products in various retail spots have been invaluable.
