Hidden Gems: Meet Kristin Lam of Kristin Lam Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Lam.

Hi Kristin , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in 1981 in Miami Florida working for David and Dash designing and custom coloring wallpaper and fabrics. I took 12 years off to raise my children. I moved to Atlanta in 1995 where I lived for 5 years. When my kids were in school I started my own design company. I moved to Southern California in 2020. I have been here ever since where I have had a lucrative and wonderful career. I have worked with amazing clients and been fortunate to be published 6 times.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most businesses there have been some ups and downs. The most difficult years of my career were definitely when the housing market crashed. It started to slow down in ’07 and ’08 and took a few years to come back.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have been able to see so many different parts of the country because I have lived in so many diverse areas. Each area is unique in it’s aesthetics. I have had to adjust my design skills to suit each region I have lived in which has helped me to be flexible and open to new ideas. I feel especially lucky that I have been able to travel to incredible destinations. This allows me to bring a unique design perspective from many corners of the world. I love the simplicity so many other countries have in their personal spaces.

I am known for allowing my clients unique personalities to shine in their own homes. I am proud of the fact that I take cues from them, often without them knowing, by looking at how they dress, the colors they wear and what makes them happy. I don’t have a particular “branded” style because I want my client’s homes to feel comfortable and feel like it is a reflection of them. It’s a really great feeling when I am finished with a job and the client loves what I have done, mostly because it feels like home to them.

I specialize in construction. I feel it is very important to be involved in the process with a client from the drawing board to the finished product.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have worked very hard and diligently on my image starting from how I present myself to the look and feel of my website which is very important. I do feel that I am extremely blessed in every aspect of my life. I have an amazing, supportive husband. I have 2 sons that have allowed me to experience all the ups and downs of being a mother and I now have 4 grandchildren I get to spoil .

From the moment I moved to California my career blossomed. My first client here ended up being very dear friends of mine. I did 2 full remodels for them in 2 states. I have recently worked for 5 years with one client who happens to be part of an old iconic American family. It was so fun to work with them, to have their full trust so I could have the freedom to do whatever I thought would be best for the various homes I worked on. It didn’t hurt that they had an unlimited budget which also made the job especially fun.
