Today we’d like to introduce you to Lavanya Prahallad.
Lavanya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Research Spark Hub (RSH) started from a very personal place.
As someone deeply involved in research, mentoring, and education, I often met highly motivated high school students who were curious and capable but lacked access to structured, meaningful research opportunities. Many existing options were either inaccessible, poorly structured, or focused more on résumé building than real learning. At the same time, I saw parents struggling to guide their children through research paths they had never experienced themselves.
To bridge this gap, I co-founded Research Spark Hub with the guidance of my husband, Kishore, and alongside my cousin, Sreerekha.
What began as a small mentorship initiative soon evolved into a structured platform connecting high school students with guided, research driven projects across disciplines such as AI, data science, health, social sciences, and environmental studies. At RSH, students are guided through the full research process. They are exposed to real research work and are supported in writing a technical research article at the conclusion of their project.
Over time, RSH has grown into a global community of students, mentors, and collaborators. Learners contribute to conference papers, technical publications, research articles, and real-world problem-solving initiatives. Today, Research Spark Hub is a space where curiosity is transformed into capability, and students gain confidence not just as applicants, but as emerging researchers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, and that has been an important part of the journey.
In the early stages, one of our biggest challenges was building credibility. Creating a research platform for high school students meant earning the trust of parents, mentors, and students. As a startup, we did not have wide visibility among parents in the beginning. Much of our early reach came through word of mouth. Members of my extended family, including Sadakaapi, helped connect us with interested families, alongside the efforts of the co-founders. My husband and his friends also played an important role in spreading the word. Over time, we built trust by consistently delivering meaningful research outcomes.
Another major challenge was growth. As interest in Research Spark Hub increased, we were careful not to compromise quality. Rapid growth can easily weaken rigor. We spent significant time designing mentorship models, research frameworks, and review processes that could scale without losing depth.
Balancing RSH with full-time professional responsibilities was also demanding. Much of the early work was built from the ground up. This included curriculum design, mentor onboarding, and student guidance. There were no templates to follow. Progress came through persistence, hands-on involvement, and constant adaptation.
These challenges ultimately strengthened Research Spark Hub. They clarified our mission and improved our processes. Most importantly, they reinforced our belief that meaningful research education must focus on learning, not optics. The resilience built during this time continues to guide how we grow today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Research Spark Hub Inc.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Research Spark Hub (RSH) is a “research first” education organization that gives high school students access to real, guided research experiences. We work with students who are curious, motivated, and ready to go beyond surface level projects. Our goal is to help them learn how to think, work, and communicate like researchers.
At RSH, students are guided through the full research process. This includes identifying meaningful problems, reviewing existing work, designing studies, analyzing data, writing academically, and presenting their findings. Our programs span areas such as AI and data science, health and biomedical research, social sciences, and environmental studies. Throughout the process, we emphasize ethical research practices and critical thinking.
What sets Research Spark Hub apart is our focus on depth and rigor. We do not run template based or mass programs. Each student’s work is closely mentored through a learning-by-doing approach. Projects are reviewed carefully and refined over multiple iterations. We value intellectual growth, clear thinking, and research integrity over speed or appearances.
RSH is also known for outcomes that are earned, not promised. Students contribute to conference papers, research articles, and real world research initiatives through sustained effort and quality work. More importantly, they leave with confidence, independence, and a clear understanding of how research works.
Trust is central to our work. Parents trust us with their children’s intellectual development. Students trust us to challenge them honestly. Mentors trust our values and processes. Research Spark Hub has grown through results and word of mouth, reflecting our commitment to doing this work the right way.
Research Spark Hub is not about shortcuts or credentials. It is about developing strong thinkers, ethical researchers, and confident learners who are prepared for higher education and meaningful careers.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for finding a mentor is to focus on learning and meaningful engagement. Strong mentorship grows from shared curiosity, consistent effort, and mutual respect. What has worked well for me is approaching people with genuine interest, thoughtful questions, and preparation, without rushing the relationship or expecting immediate outcomes.
As a Co-Founder, I have learned that the most impactful mentors are often those who truly enjoy teaching and giving back. Many of my mentors have demanding full-time careers, yet they still make time to guide others. They do this because mentoring aligns with their passion for learning and sharing knowledge.
I have also learned that trust matters more than networking. Following through, applying feedback, and staying connected over time builds stronger relationships than one-time conversations or transactional interactions.
From a leadership perspective, mentorship is a long-term relationship. When you show commitment to growth, respect people’s time, and consistently put in effort, the right mentors and meaningful connections tend to form naturally.
