Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Sayed.
Hi Malik, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The name “Akhis” means “my brother” in Arabic. Our recipes come from our deep family traditions as Middle Easterns, passed down through many generations. Over the years, my brother and I have taken many trips all around the world, particularly throughout the Middle East, discovering new flavors, techniques, and ideas along the way. Akhis is where all of that comes together. It’s a fusion of different Middle Eastern cultures, blended into one brotherhood of flavors, and it’s a privilege to share this with our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Creating Akhis definitely was not a smooth road, but a very rewarding and humbling one so far. One of our biggest challenges has been perfecting our recipes making sure every dish tastes exactly the way we want it to, with the same love and quality we’d serve in our own homes. We always strive to source fresh, high-quality ingredients and that itself is another hurdle, especially as we refuse to compromise on what goes into our food. On top of that, we’ve had to balance creating dishes that are packed with flavor and authenticity while still being efficient enough to keep up with customer demand. We pride ourselves on making sure every time customers come in to order, that the food will be consistently great, if not better than the last time. It’s a constant learning curve where we continuously try to level up, and each challenge is a blessing to become better every day.
We’ve been impressed with Akhis Authentic Shawarma & Kebab, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Akhis, our focus has always been on consistency and quality. We work hard to make sure every meal we serve is just as great as the last, using only the highest quality ingredients. Too often I’ve eaten somewhere that tasted amazing in the moment, but left me feeling awful afterwards and I never wanted our customers to have that experience. Our goal is to create food that’s not only delicious, but also leaves you feeling good after you eat it. That means fresh, clean ingredients, prepared with care, and recipes that deliver both flavor and balance. We want our guests to enjoy every bite, knowing they’re getting the best of what we can offer. Whether you’re vegetarian, halal only, seed oil free, or dairy free, Akhis’ menu has something to satisfy every unique craving.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
We feel very fortunate and lucky to have our restaurant in beautiful Pacific Beach, however I believe hard work is what continues the perception of “luck”. If we’re going to talk about luck, I believe the only people who find it are the ones who work the hardest. The harder you work, the more opportunities seem to appear. At Akhis, we put all our effort into making sure every customer leaves happy from the quality of the food to the service they receive. That dedication is what drives our success, not just chance.
