Today we’d like to introduce you to Maricel Murphy
Hi Maricel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in the San Francisco Bay area around 1998 as an assistant. After a few years of training I was placed on the floor as an official hair stylist.
I dove into everything! Including
, haircutting , coloring on all textures of hair , makeup and special event styling , including weddings for several of my clients.
I worked all over the bay area including San Francisco. It was a blast!
In 2001 I met my husband , life changed , alot!
Fast forward to 2009 , I was married with kids. We landed in beautiful San Diego where I started taking more advanced classes in cutting and balayage. I worked at a few amazing salons in the area and met alot of wonderful and talented stylists!
Ultimately around 2020 I decided to start my own business and specialize in cutting , including adding more curly hair services!
I really got into hair education and am regularly taking advanced cutting classes. I’m especially obsessed with trichology and cosmetic chemistry.
Studying these things has benefitted me so much because I know so much more about hair and also ingredients in hair products. With this knowledge , I am able to teach my clients exactly what they need to k own for their specific hair type , ite been really kool!
I really enjoy being my own boss , creating a welcoming space for my amazing clients!
and mostly educating them on all things hair!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles along the way have mostly been around changes I’ve had to make since opening my own business.
I’ve had to learn all the ins and outs of owning a business , on my own , such as accounting , marketing , online scheduling and the lost goes on.
Change IS hard , and I’ve learned so much about myself in the process.

Maricel Murphy Hair Studio is welcoming cozy salon suite space. I’ve been in the beauty industry 26 years and now specialize in cutting , including curly hair (my favorite kind!)
I believe what sets me apart if my obsession with knowledge! I’ve discovered I’m a bit of a nerd and am proud of that!
What I’m most proud of is the detail and care I put into my work , I’m my hardest critic and that’s part of what makes my work good.
I’d like people to know when you’re in my chair I listen to your needs , teach you everything I know and help you achieve your desired look at home. My goal is always to help my clients live their hair!
