Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Frick.
Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I spent more than 25 years racing the Baja races in many different capacities, which gave me a deep understanding of the backcountry trails far off the beaten path. Along the way, I fell in love with Baja itself, the people, the food, the culture, and the overall vibe.
Eventually, I realized I wanted to shift my focus from racing to sharing this place with others. I started offering small, basic guided trips, and people kept coming back and telling their friends. From there, Camp4lo grew naturally.
Today, we offer everything from intimate small, group trips with four to six vehicles to larger signature events like the Milestar Tires 4LoFiesta in San Felipe a laid-back, community-driven event with trail runs, vendors, and a big raffle. We also offer fully customized private tours, any time of year and for any length, built around what people want to experience in Baja.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road, in the beginning it was very tough, and still is, to get people to cross that border. We specialize in escorting our guests to and from the border to alleviate the nervousness..
I am constantly feeling questions for potential clients almost daily. That’s really the biggest hurdle of the US side.. on the Baja side. We are dealing with a different culture and entirely on how they do business. It’s very challenging sometimes but over the years we have found that we have forged friendships with our hostels and ranches that we stay with and when we arrive, we are treated like family
As you know, we’re big fans of Camp 4Lo Baja Excursions . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Camp4lo specializes in small-group and private off-road adventures in Baja California, focusing on remote routes, local food, and authentic experiences rather than tourist stops. With decades of Baja racing and exploration experience, the trips are designed to be safe, accessible, and deeply rooted in local relationships.
What truly sets Camp4lo apart is the community. Guests often return year after year, and events like the Milestar Tires 4LoFiesta have become as much about connection as driving. The goal is simple: do Baja right, support the people who live there, and give travelers an experience they couldn’t create on their own.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has definitely played a role, both good and bad, but it’s never been the whole story. Being in the right place at the right time helped open doors, but staying there required consistency, preparation, and strong relationships.
The challenges, breakdowns, weather, and unexpected setbacks has taught me far more than the easy wins. Over time, I’ve come to see luck less as something that happens to you and more as something you meet halfway by showing up and doing the work.
