Hi Matthew, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Sure! My journey started with a deep love for surfing and a passion for the ocean. I founded Oceanside Surf School to share that love and to inspire others to enjoy and protect our beautiful waves.
I wanted to do more than just teach people how to surf. I combined expert surf instruction with a focus on environmental stewardship. So, along with our surf lessons, we also do beach clean-ups and use eco-friendly practices to keep our coastline pristine.
The school quickly became a favorite spot for people of all ages who want to learn to surf while also learning about ocean conservation. It’s been incredible to see how we’ve built a tight-knit community that not only improves their surfing skills but also develops a deep respect for the ocean.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was finding the right balance between my passion for surfing and the business side of running the school. Integrating my love for the ocean and environmental conservation into the curriculum while managing the practical aspects of the business was tough.
I had to figure out how to keep the focus on both top-notch surf instruction and our commitment to eco-friendly practices. Convincing people of the value in combining these two goals wasn’t always easy, especially when they were just eager to learn to surf.
There were also logistical hurdles in organizing events and managing the school’s growth while staying true to my vision. But despite these struggles, the support from the community and the positive impact we’ve made have made it all worth it.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The whole thing with life is that everyones got a lot of advice. You don’t need any advice when it comes to pursuing a dream. Follow your heart and the path will present itself.
I never planned on the school becoming the space that it is now. But with patience the whole thing blossomed and became what is is today. Trusting myself was something that came later on, at first I was just hanging on and riding the wave!
