Hi Max, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As co-founder of RAPID, my path to creating San Diego’s premier cold-plunge and sauna experience started in Germany, where I was a youth professional athlete. That chapter instilled discipline that carried me into a decade as a high-stakes poker player, traveling globally for tournaments. Poker sharpened my mental resilience, but my entrepreneurial ventures fueled my desire to build something lasting. I’ve always been driven by optimizing performance, not just through grit (that is hard to do), but through intentional recovery and mindfulness.
In Germany, “sauna paradises” were part of life, vibrant, meticulously crafted spaces where people recharged and connected. When I settled in San Diego, I was surprised by the lack of dedicated contrast-therapy facilities. Gym saunas felt lackluster, nothing like the invigorating experience I knew. My friend James were actively looking for a business to start together. One night, mid-sauna session in my backyard, we realized this was it, the business we’d been looking for. Why not bring an authentic Finnish experience to San Diego? We were enjoying it so much, surely others would too.
That spark became RAPID. James, with his engineering precision, and I set out to design a wellness hub for anyone seeking balance, athletes, and professionals. We broke ground in mid-June 2025, and construction is now in full swing as we race toward our grand opening later this year. It’s thrilling to see our vision take shape, one of the largest saunas in the country, paired with six custom cold plunges, all crafted for peak health and relaxation.
RAPID is more than a facility; it’s my way of blending my love for performance, community, and recovery.
We’re creating a space where people can pause, reset, and thrive, right here in the city I call home. I’m excited to share this modern “sauna paradise” with San Diego and build a community that values wellness amidst the seemingly never-ending busyness of modern life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building RAPID has been a labor of love, but the road hasn’t been smooth. One of the biggest challenges was discovering that basically no one in the U.S. knows how to build a truly high-quality sauna, and off-the-shelf cold plunges at our premium standard simply don’t exist. We had to design both from scratch, leaning on rare Finnish expertise from Europe, which was technically daunting and put immense pressure on us to deliver the experience we promised. Securing the right location in San Diego’s competitive real estate market was another hurdle, we needed an accessible urban oasis, which wasn’t easy to find. We also paid close attention that across the wellness landscape, new sauna and cold-plunge venues were emerging, brimming with trendy offerings, yoga, dance, emotional release workshops, and social events. It raised the question: do people crave this fusion of entertainment with contrast therapy? Yet, James and I held firm to our vision. RAPID is about the timeless essence of recovery, grounded in science and tradition. We’re crafting a premium experience that prioritizes relaxation, health, mental clarity, and meaningful moments with friends, a serene counterpoint to the relentless pace of modern life.
Moments of doubt crept in as we balanced budgets and our uncompromising vision, but our passion for bringing something unique to San Diego kept us grounded. We collaborated with European consultants, doubled down on our research-driven approach, and stuck to our goal, ensuring RAPID offers an unmatched wellness experience.

We specialize in delivering a science-backed, premium experience with one of the largest saunas in the country, designed to authentic Finnish standards, and six custom cold plunges with adjustable temperatures and pristine water quality. Unlike typical wellness facilities, RAPID is laser-focused on sauna and cold-plunge therapy, prioritizing relaxation, health benefits, mental clarity, and community connection over trendy add-ons like yoga or parties. How do you think about happiness?
What brings me the most joy is building RAPID as an extension of how I live my life, surrounded by people, fostering connection and well-being. As a teenager and young adult, I thought I wasn’t a “people person.” Growing up in Germany and later traveling for poker, I felt introverted and lonely. But moving to San Diego changed me, I discovered I am very interested in people and love fostering community. I’m always hosting at my house, inviting friends to hang out, often in my backyard sauna and cold plunge, where we talk and recharge. Creating RAPID feels like sharing that experience on a bigger scale. Knowing our facility will help people step away from stress, boost their health, and connect with others who value wellness, that’s what drives me. It’s not just a business; it’s a way to build community and make a difference in the city I call home.
