Hidden Gems: Meet Moises Lopez of ML Strength & Conditioning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moises Lopez.

Hi Moises, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My initial stint after graduating from college with a Kinesiology Degree was at Nifty After Fifty, where I dedicated myself to assisting seniors in achieving their fitness objectives. However, I soon realized that the fitness industry had overlooked the population in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. From my personal experience, I understood that strength was crucial for longevity and overall well-being. I noticed a significant gap in the industry’s approach to catering to this demographic, and I felt compelled to fill that void.

Eight years later, ML Strength & Conditioning was founded. Our mission is to empower everyone to achieve strength for health, with a special emphasis on our trainees in their 40s and beyond.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been an easy journey to reach our current state. When I first opened this gym in 2018, we had no clients at all. While there was some progress, I vividly remember the times when I had to deliver food for Postmates and DoorDash to make ends meet.

Then, the unthinkable happened in 2020 with the pandemic. We had to close our doors. Fortunately, I had clients who stayed by my side during this difficult time. They continued to work out online, and this helped me save the gym from going under.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about ML Strength & Conditioning ?
At ML Strength & Conditioning, our mission is to empower individuals to achieve strength through the safe and effective use of barbells. We cater to clients in their 40s and beyond, specializing in teaching them how to maximize their strength gains through proper form and well-designed programming.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to working with the aging population. We take pride in educating and inspiring our clients to understand the profound benefits of strength training.

In addition to our personalized 1-on-1 training sessions, we offer small group training sessions. Our small group training is limited to 5 participants, ensuring that each trainee receives dedicated attention throughout their entire lifting session. Unlike larger classes, you won’t feel lost or overlooked. Our group sessions provide ample coaching and support to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe calculated risks can be valuable depending on the situation. For example, my wife and I were newly married when we made the decision to leave Los Angeles and move to San Diego so I could pursue opening this gym. It was definitely a risk, but a calculated one. I’ve never considered myself much of a risk-taker, but in this case I took the leap—and so far, it’s paid off.
