Hidden Gems: Meet Roberto Martinez of Braven Agency and SMRTS.co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Martinez.

Hi Roberto, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My work ethic and my career both come from the same place: community. I was raised around people who built stability from very little and turned scarcity into survival through grit, creativity, and mutual support. From an early age, I learned that when opportunity doesn’t show up for you, you don’t wait; you build the door yourself.

That mindset carried me through every chapter of my career. I’ve worked across government, academia, and technology, always focused on one mission: helping overlooked entrepreneurs gain access to tools, technology, and knowledge that create real economic mobility. Along the way, I was appointed the City of Los Angeles’ Entrepreneur-in-Residence, where I helped launch LA Optimized to support small businesses during and after the pandemic. I’ve also had the opportunity to collaborate with organizations such as Google, Amazon, Meta, TikTok, and the Wells Fargo Foundation.

Today, I lead Braven Agency, where we help small and mid-size businesses modernize their marketing and operations through AI and digital systems, and SMRTS.co, an AI-powered business assessment tool designed to give entrepreneurs clarity in minutes. No matter the title or platform, the heart of my work has stayed the same: democratizing access and building pathways for underestimated founders to thrive.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. Building across different industries means constantly adapting, learning new systems, navigating uncertainty, and sometimes being early before people fully understand the value of the work. I’ve had to reinvent myself more than once, often without a roadmap.

One of the biggest challenges has been pushing back against the idea that innovation and advanced tools are meant only for large companies or well-funded founders. A lot of my work has involved translating complex digital concepts into something practical, human, and culturally relevant, and that takes patience and persistence.

But the struggles also sharpened my purpose. Spending time with entrepreneurs who are fighting to keep their businesses alive keeps me grounded. Their resilience fuels my own, and it reminds me that the work is about impact.

We’ve been impressed with Braven Agency and SMRTS.co, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Braven Agency is a digital marketing and systems agency that helps small businesses, nonprofits, and institutions grow through practical digital transformation and AI-enabled workflows. We specialize in helping organizations build clarity, capacity, and sustainable systems. What sets us apart is that we don’t lead with hype. We focus on execution, real-world constraints, and solutions that actually work for teams with limited time and resources.

SMRTS.co is an AI-powered business assessment platform that helps entrepreneurs quickly understand where their business stands, what’s working, and where to focus next. In just minutes, founders get insight that traditionally required consultants or expensive audits. The tool is already being used by partners like Wells Fargo Foundation, the County of LA, ICIC, and TikTok, and we’re continuing to expand access nationwide.

What I’m most proud of is that everything we build centers the entrepreneur. The goal isn’t just growth, but it’s empowerment. When entrepreneurs rise, communities rise.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The next decade will be defined by accessibility and systems. AI and automation will become standard, but the real differentiator won’t be the tools; it will be how well organizations integrate them into human-centered workflows. Businesses that thrive will be the ones that build clarity, governance, and adaptability early.

I also see a major shift toward democratized education. Entrepreneurs won’t wait for permission or credentials; they’ll seek tools and knowledge that meet them where they are. The gap between those who can translate technology into action and those who can’t will widen, which makes this moment critical. The opportunity is to make sure small businesses aren’t left behind in the process.
