Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Wilkes of Barker Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wilkes.

Hi Sarah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Dr. Sarah Wilkes, but I go by Dr. Sarah in my office! I own and practice at Barker Chiropractic in Santee, California. I am so proud to say I have been part of Barker Chiropractic’s family since 2007 where I worked as a chiropractic assistant until I decided to follow in my mentor and founder’s footsteps, those of Dr. David K. Barker., D.C. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology in 2011 and my Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2014, licensed in the state of California.

I’m honored to live my passion and serve families using my post-graduate studies of prenatal and pediatric chiropractic assessments and techniques via the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Although I may specialize in this incredible niche of people, I am blessed to serve anyone of any age.

I am married to my best friend Shane and together we welcomed our first son Carson in 2019 and our second son Bennett in August of 2021. They are the lights of my life and can’t wait to teach them to follow their passions and that health comes from within and watch them thrive!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road that has led me to where I am at now has not always been smooth and straight. Although I knew where I’d practice and who would mentor me, I was definitely not prepared to what was right around the corner after I graduated.

I was able to complete my last semester of graduate school back home in San Diego under the mentorship of Dr. Barker, the very man that inspired me to become a chiropractor. I returned home in January 2014 and began treating patients- it was truly incredible working alongside such a legend in my community. I graduated in April 2014 and then received the devastating news that Dr. Barker had stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer in May 2014. With this news, it was “sink or swim” for my life path and career.

Learning as quickly and efficiently as I could under Dr. Barker, I was never more inspired and motivated to continue his legacy. He passed in December of 2014 and I am proud to say, I am swimming! His sudden passing taught me so much and was the biggest challenge I’ve had that has gotten me to where I am at today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Barker Chiropractic, we are more than just another chiropractic office. We strive to serve our community with the utmost love, support, compassion, and best possible chiropractic care. We aim to make every single patient’s experience unique while offering relief and wellness care to all members of the family.

We specialize in perinatal care and pediatrics- aiding in areas like conception, prenatal aches and pains, body and birth preparations, postpartum adaptations and ease, and providing the most gentle care for newborns, infants, toddlers, and adolescents.

Why do babies need to get adjusted, you may ask? Babies grow neurologically the most in the first year of life than any other time; with that, getting their precious and fragile spines assessed and adjusted will allow for the most optimal development. Babies also grow in size and musculature so quickly, that getting their joints assessed and adjusted will make sure symmetry and milestones are met as well!

At Barker Chiropractic, we use the most advanced techniques to adjust our patients with precision. We use a special table that allows for the most effective and least aggressive adjustment for most adults. We also are proficient in the Activator method. allowing us to adjust the most delicate structures gently, including the spines of infants.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned in my practice thus far is to do all things with love. As cliché as that sounds, focusing on serving my community the best way I know how is my primary focus. Pouring love into each adjustment is where the greatest reward for both myself and my patients lies.
