Hi Shayn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
You know, my story actually started back in 1996 when I joined the US Army at just 16. The next year, I went to boot camp, and by 18, I was in Germany. At 19, I faced a combat zone deployment, and life kept moving: marriage at 20 and my first child at 21. I went on to become an Electro-Mechanical engineer, traveling to over 100 countries, but I felt something was missing. That’s when my passion for filmmaking and business kicked in, leading me to start my first company in 2013. Eventually, this evolved into Icon Industries Inc. in 2022.
I still remember making my first film with friends in 2007 – that got me hooked on filmmaking! When I began my business, I had some talent and a basic knowledge of business, but there was so much to learn. I kept pushing through, learning the ins and outs of the industry along the way.
As I learned more, I realized that many businesses needed guidance on becoming subject matter experts in their niche. That’s when I decided to focus on helping others grow and excel in their industries.
Now, as CEO and Co-Founder of Icon Industries Inc., I’m proud of our work. We help build icons and industry leaders who are true experts in their fields. Together with my small, dedicated team, we support our clients in reaching their goals and thriving in their industries.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, to be honest, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. There have been a lot of struggles and challenges along the way. When I first started, I had the talent and passion, but my understanding of how to run a business was pretty limited. I had to figure things out as I went, learning from my mistakes and getting better over time.
One of the biggest challenges was managing money. Like most startups, we had to deal with cash flow issues and finding funding. We had to be smart about our expenses and find creative ways to make ends meet.
Then, there was the challenge of building a strong team. It wasn’t easy to find like-minded people with the right skills to support my vision. I had to learn how to attract, manage, and keep the right talent on board.
And let’s not forget about the competition. We’re in a crowded market, so standing out and showing what makes us different from everyone else was a big challenge. It took some time to really refine our unique value proposition and find the niche we could serve best.
Plus, we’ve had to adapt to a lot of industry changes. Technology and marketing trends evolve so fast, and we’ve had to keep up and make sure our services stay relevant. That meant a lot of learning and innovation along the way.
But you know what? All those struggles have been worth it. They’ve taught me so much and helped shape both the company and me as a leader. And that’s played a big part in the success of Icon Industries Inc. today.

I’d love to share some advice on finding a mentor and networking in general.
First, identify your goals and interests. Knowing what you’re aiming for will help you find a mentor who aligns with your objectives. Consider someone with experience and success in the areas you’re looking to grow.
Next, don’t be afraid to reach out. LinkedIn is a great platform to connect with potential mentors. Send personalized messages expressing your admiration for their work and ask if they’d be open to a conversation. Remember, people are often flattered by a genuine interest in their expertise.
In-person networking events, industry conferences, and workshops are fantastic opportunities to meet potential mentors. Introduce yourself, engage in meaningful conversations, and exchange contact information. You never know who might turn into a valuable mentor or colleague.
When attending networking events, be genuine and curious. People can sense when others are genuinely interested in them. Ask thoughtful questions and listen actively to their responses.
Building relationships takes time. Be patient and consistent in your interactions. By maintaining contact and demonstrating your commitment to growth, you’re more likely to secure a mentor who is invested in your success.
