Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Sass.
Shelley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in South Africa and I have lived around the world – a key influence in the ever evolving eclectic, textural and cozy looks that I am known for. I love to infuse little bits of culture and tradition from different eras into my designs as I add my own layered, signature blend. In addition, my continuous research and keeping abreast of design trends results in a wonderfully curated “story” in which I include special details that are unique to each individual project.
Inspired by my mother and grandmother, both exceptionally talented seamstresses, I was creative from a very young age, and have always had a love for decor, fashion and art. I studied Interior Design and Fashion Design in South Africa, Australia and San Diego, and as a result developed a passion for design. I started out in the Fashion Design arena where I owned and operated my own business in South Africa for many years. After immigrating to San Diego 33 years ago, I experienced a brief stint in the corporate world of telecommunications. Whilst enjoying that world, after a few years, my creativity took over and I was drawn back into the design world, but this time with Interiors.
Today Shelley Sass Designs and Sass Construction and Design (both businesses owned by myself and my husband) are a full-service Interior Design and General Construction Company, assisting clients world wide with a wide variety of services including:
interior design, whole and partial home/room remodels, furniture, lighting, accessories, flooring, window treatments, re-upholstery, closet design, space planning, 3D rendering, garage doors, landscape design, windows and doors, painting, collaborating with architects and contractors/builders, designing custom pieces and more.
For us the sky is the limit. We thrive on new and exciting projects, and we look forward to meeting with you soon!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part it has been a pretty smooth road and for that I am eternally grateful. Both my husband and I are quite conservative by nature so we examine things carefully before diving into them and that is always a good thing especially in the world of construction where you can easily get in deeper than you anticipated, and things can easily go sideways and become very costly very fast. We have been involved in some fabulous projects and have had wonderful clients, some of whom have become friends.

On the construction side (Sass Construction and Design Lic #1067716), Stephen and Shelley specialize in full home, kitchen and bathroom remodels, and they go above and beyond to put their clients needs first. They take pride in delivering their projects on time, in their organizational skills and efficiency, and their outstanding customer service exceeds their clients expectations every time.
Stephen runs the office and project manages and oversees every construction project, and most days you will find him onsite at one of their exciting projects. He loves to watch the progress as the projects develop and grow, and enjoys hanging out with his guys and having a laugh. With his ability to solve all problems and work under pressure, you can be assured that you are in good hands. In addition to that, he is super reliable, organized, efficient, is able to prioritize, and is always a step ahead.
For Stephen and Shelley their business is a constant pleasure, and the comfort, contentment, beauty, inspiration and happiness that it brings their clients is their reward for why they do what they do.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Persevere and never give up. Nothing good comes easy and there is always a solution for every challenge. One has to have a problem solving mindset and outlook on life if you want to be successful in this business. Positivity is also super important. Most everything is achievable. It may sometimes take a few days to figure out the best solution, and it may cost more than originally anticipated, but most times everything is doable in one way or another.
Also in this business one needs to be proactive, super organized and flexible. On most of our projects there is at least one new thing that we will learn from for the next time, and it’s important to take note of these instances and keep them in your toolbox for future projects.
