Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Paz Jr
Hi Victor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a local comedian that produces comedy shows all over San Diego County. I have shows in East Village, Point Loma, Encinitas, solana beach, and Vista, and potential other venue owners looking to have us do shows there.
As a comedian it’s hard to get what we refer to as stage time to improve your technique and skill set, and without it, just like anything you don’t tend to improve your craft. Anyone who wants to be great at something has to put their time in. Most comics start out doing things like open mics, and those are very helpful. However they aren’t a show, and you certainly don’t get the feedback you need to improve your jokes.
I’ve taken multiple classes to help improve my technique and have several mentors in San Diego county. Always working to be both a better producer and comic for not just me but San Diego county. Starting to make shows has made the biggest difference on me understand different audiences and performing more often helping me become a much stronger comic.
My production company is called Kacklez, and I have 3 partners some are partners at a show level and some are like me where we over see operations at multiple venues.
Our goal is to put on a great comedy show at an affordable price near you where all the comics get paid. In a lot of shows comics don’t make any money even though they provide the entertainment. We want San Diego to laugh a little more.
Kacklez productions has done multiple sold out shows in Vista, and Point Loma but has a lot of work to do at our other venues as they are currently smaller shows. We also look to help build more comics locally and promote them. We look to offer a comedy show for everyone, so we want to do a comedy show in areas where we can appeal to people of all sorts!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are still struggles going on, building a good comedy show and the reputation requires money and time, and comedy doesn’t exactly have tons of money in it. So we often use our more profitable shows to help carry some of the shows that require further investment. The goal is to have good shows everywhere people go! We don’t put on shows with people we don’t think are funny.
Often there are cliques in comedy or anything and we don’t look to penetrate the cliques and owe favors because we simply want to put on a good show for people. Some comics have thought they are better than they are and don’t want to hear we don’t think you are funny enough to be on the show.
Before when we first got started we would lose money to bring in a good headliner, now we are able to afford the headliner and pay the comics, it took us time to build a big enough audience so we don’t lose money on every show!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kacklez and Paz Imaging?
Well I’m a professional phot0grapher and videographer as well as comedy show producer. The income from comedy isn’t very high at this point so professionally I’m still a photographer that does a variety of work but loves to do high end editorial style work you can find it at www.pazimaging.com.
For our comedy shows we specialize in great affordable comedy shows. We are proud that people love going to our little shows and often enjoy repeatedly coming to these shows! We’ve built a brand as great show for comics and people who go.
We pay all of our comics, at almost all of our shows, and we have comics that are very well known in southern California looking to get on this show. We’ve upped the branding recently with adding a light to the backdrop. so it can be seen as comics perform on stage. It’s unusual to pay all your comics, it’s unusual to have such a good reputation so early on as a comic.
We are excited the growth of 1 show a month to doing 9 shows a month coming in February. With opportunity for as many as 20 a month by the end of the year. We feel by April we will have 2 t0 3 weekly shows for a great comedy show you can enjoy at an affordable price near you.
How do you define success?
Success to me is all perspective. I see how far I’d like Kacklez to go, as I have plans to grow beyond San Diego County into both Orange county and Riverside county… But also for the website to grow to something that can help comics grow their business long term. So I see that we have been a success so far as we are now profitable, but I also see the future as so much further I want to go.
We have a lot to improve on but most already would say we are a massive success to have an ongoing sold out show and for comics to be asking to get on our little shows at venues most wouldn’t have cared about just a year ago.
