Today we’d like to introduce you to Vladimir and Fernanda Guskic.
Vladimir and Fernanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We started Cubic Orange seven years ago as partners in both life and business. From the beginning, our goal was clear: design should never feel generic. For us, it is always about story, capturing the soul of a brand and building a world around it.
Before launching Cubic Orange, Vladimir spent more than a decade in California working in animation and motion graphics, creating campaigns for Delta Airlines, HGTV, eBay, Petco, and even a Super Bowl commercial. With roots in Belgrade and years of experience in the U.S., he brought a cross-cultural perspective that became the foundation of the studio.
Since then, we have grown into a story-first identity consultancy, crafting brand, motion, and environmental work for clients like HP, Intel, and Accenture Song, as well as San Diego schools. What makes us proud is not only the clients we have worked with but the fact that we have built everything on one principle: work is always better with heart.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most independent studios, the road has not always been easy. We started Cubic Orange without outside funding, which meant we had to be resourceful and strategic from the start. We also had to learn how to balance creative work with the realities of running a business.
Another challenge has been building in San Diego, a city not always known as a design capital. We chose to see that as an opportunity. It pushed us to prove that world-class design can thrive here and allowed us to carve out our own space in the city’s creative landscape.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We call Cubic Orange a story-first identity consultancy. That means we do more than create logos or campaigns. We design systems and experiences that capture the essence of a brand.
Our work shows up in many ways, packaging on shelves, motion graphics on global stages, websites that tell a company’s story, or signage and wayfinding that shape how people move through a space. No matter the format, the goal is the same: to make design feel alive and meaningful.
When a client says, “This feels like us,” that is the best compliment we can receive.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
We both grew up on different continents, Vladimir in Yugoslavia and Fernanda in Brazil.
Vladimir’s childhood during a time of conflict shaped his resilience and made him value freedom and opportunity. He was always curious, always sketching and writing, but his path was far from traditional. Coming to the U.S. felt like a second chance. At the Art Institute in San Diego, he immersed himself in design and discovered how storytelling could become his life’s work.
Fernanda grew up in Florianópolis, a beautiful island city surrounded by beaches and culture. Her father and grandfather were both graphic designers, so creativity was part of everyday life. Music and dance also played a big role, giving her a natural sense of rhythm and harmony. That upbringing gave her a love for art and design, which she now carries into her work at Cubic Orange.
Together, those different beginnings, one built on resilience and the other on heritage and artistry, shape the way we create today.
