Today we’d like to introduce you to William Walker.
Hi William, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began training at least three days a week when I got to High School at 14 years old. I grew up on the east coast in the small state of West Virginia where obesity was rampant. We were ranked #2 nationally in terms of health complications and early death caused by obesity almost every single year that I lived there. There isn’t much opportunity in terms of the “fitness industry” in any of the areas surrounding where I lived, so in 2015 I decided to leave for the West Coast and start from scratch. The first few years were pretty rough, learning as much as I could, meeting as many people as I could and saying yes to as many opportunities as I could. When I first arrived on the west coast, I worked at a 24-hour fitness at the front desk. I swept floors, cleaned bathrooms, and even lived on a couch during this time period.
But still, I was thankful for a job and knew my work ethic would someday pay off. I soaked up as much nutritional knowledge as I could, took online courses for certifications, learned exercise science and read as much as I could in my spare time. I started coaching friends and family to lose weight, barely charging for my services, as my main objective at the time was to make a name for myself. Once I had helped over 50 people lose 20+ pounds and 50 people gain 20+ pounds, competitive athletes started asking me for assistance and my business grew. It was at this point here in San Diego where I first became exposed to competitive bodybuilding, and once I decided to pursue it, I was hooked. I did my first NPC show early in 2018 and won 2 classes and an overall in Men’s Physique with the help of my now mentor Stan Mcquay. Fast forward a few years later and I have been a head coach for Physique Inc and Best Built Fitness now for a while helping hundreds achieve their goals, and even achieving a few of mine along the way as well, such as signing with several big agencies, published model, and even achieved IFBB PRO status in Men’s Physique in 2020 at 28 years old.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had many struggles along my path but I wouldn’t change any of it for the world as I believe they are what made me strong mentally and drove me to become who I am today and who I will become in the future.
Growing up as a child who was part of Asian descent (my Mom is from Oahu) in one of the most predominantly white states where islanders and Asians are almost non-existent was difficult, but struggle breeds success and determination if placed upon the right shoulders! Being different is a blessing!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
WalkerFitness is my personal LLC that I fully own. I specialize in prep competition coaching and lifestyle coaching under the umbrellas of Physique Inc and Best Built Fitness LLC.
I pride myself on giving personal attention to every athlete whether elite athlete or ordinary life goals for day to day clients. I am a coach first, professional athlete second, and myself as a professional athlete never let that get in the way of my coaching or my top priorities which are my athletes/clients.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anyone just starting out on their fitness journey is to seek help early. Experimenting may make you a good coach (as this is what I did for over a decade in my fitness journey) but proper guidance will get you to your goals 10x faster.
