Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Freire.
Hi Yvette, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Becoming a florist was never on my radar as a career choice, but I really fell in love with the entire process of being a wedding florist. I was working at Seaworld in 2018 as I finished my final year in college when a family friend, Abby from Sugar Rose Flowers, posted that she needed some helpers for a flower crown bar. My mom connected us, and that was my first step into the world of flowers! The more I learned about different flower varieties, design techniques, and even the logistics of being the most efficient during wedding weeks it aligned more and more with something I could really be good at! I spent a few years working and learning from so many talented San Diego florists before diving into my own events, and I am so grateful for all of the hands-on experience and connections I’ve made in the past six years. My list of favorite flowers is never-ending with each market trip and freelancing opportunity, but Dahlias truly have my heart with all of their different shapes and colors! I love the ability to be creative and it’s so special to create something beautiful that is going to be part of one of the most important days of someone’s life! I am so excited about all the weddings, events, and vendor/client connections that are to come!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely been an interesting road! Aside from Covid-19 bringing the wedding industry to a complete halt for a while, it is continuously an industry that ebbs and flows. Floristry is a very physically demanding job that requires you to be on your feet for hours and hours at a time to get the job done. Shortly after I had my first few weddings as “Florals By Yvette,” I started feeling a strong pain in my lower back and eventually down my left leg. I’d never experienced that feeling before, and it eventually became truly impossible to even stand for more than a few minutes at a time without feeling a horrible burning sensation down my left leg. It took a few months of physical therapy to get back to normal, and my left calf is still a bit numb, but I was afraid of how long that pain would hinder my ability to continue this career that I’d just started! Thankfully, I have so much amazing support from my family and floral community that I haven’t had to struggle too much beyond that!
We’ve been impressed with Florals By Yvette, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My floristry business is called “Florals By Yvette.” I spent so much time trying to decide on a name for my business and I noticed that it was hard for me to remember the florist’s name behind the business name sometimes. I decided that I loved the simplicity of “Florals By Yvette” and that it would be easier for fellow vendors and clients to remember the name behind the business!
I am a florist who specializes in weddings and events. I have always been a project-oriented person, and I love being able to combine my love for projects with the beauty of flowers and design. Although there are many different niches in the world of floristry, I realized that my favorite and most passionate one is the wedding industry.
I believe that what sets me apart from others is the dedication, passion, and personal attention I provide for all of my clients to ensure their dreams come true on their special day. I have been told that I am a very personable person, and I love the opportunity to have phone consultations with prospective clients. In these phone consultations, I carefully listen to my clients in order to truly understand their vision and answer any questions they might have. Additionally, I take advantage of this opportunity to educate my clients and provide them with the most insightful recommendations that would best work for them.
What I’m most proud of is that my brand, “Florals by Yvette,” is a reality. When I was first introduced to flowers, I imagined what it would be like to have my own brand and do my dream job. Now, I can happily say my dream has become a reality and that’s what I’m most proud of!
I want the readers to know that “Florals by Yvette” provides the best service to each client because their dream wedding is my dream job! I provide the best service to each one of my clients to ensure their vision comes to life!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I played soccer from age 5 to 17, and as the years went on, I learned that defense was definitely my favorite position. I even scored a few goals from the half-line! I absolutely loved to read! I tore through the Harry Potter books in elementary school and read the Twilight series twice in my tween years. In high school, I even started my school’s first book club and ironically discovered my least favorite book, “The Catcher In The Rye”. I never loved being the center of attention but rather on the creative side behind the scenes. It was definitely a good predictor for my current career path!
